To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .ERNEST a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolle Ear Clenchers and I do hereby declare the ollowing to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to means for clenching the pendent margins of a trolleywire ear, when arranged over the wire, around the sides and bottom of the said wire, bringing the edges together, or as nearly together as the conditions may requlre.
The nature of the invention embodies a device, termed by me a clencher that is adapted to be moved with requisite force against the projecting margins of a trolley-wire ear, arranged over or about the wire, and by reason of the form of the surface coming into con- O'r'ro MARSH, y
tact with said margins of the ears, clench orclose the same on the wire, the ear and wire being suitably held or supported on the side opposite to the clencher to allow the latter to perform its stated functions.
The invention is shown as embodied in the means illustrated in the annexed drawings,
forming a partof this specification, in view of Y which it will be described with respect to its construction. and mode of operation and then be ointed out in the subjoined claims.

In the drawings, 10 designatesthe casing, constructed and arranged to have the clencher 11 move therein, the said casing being made in two parts, connected by bolts or screws 12 extended through holes formed through projecting lugs or swells 13 formed on the ends of the casing. Furthermore, the said casing is provided on the upper edges of its extended sides with resilient clamps or holders 14 that are constructed with inward and downwardly beveled margins, adapted to be moved upward against thev sides of the portion of the ears astride of the wires, springing apart in so doing to engage the upper sides of that portion 15 of the trolley ear 16 and hold the wire and the said portion of the ears astride of the same firmly against upward movement, and sililpport the same against being moved latera y.
The upper surface 18 of the clencher 11 is given such form that when it is forced against the lower edges 19 of the trolley ear, from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that in which it is represented in Fig. 2, it will turn the same inward about the wire, bringing said edges together or nearly together, as shown in said Fig. 2. In the drawings, the said upper surcave form or having inclined sides and a base or center to serve as a kind of anvil to press the inturned edges of the ears against the wire the ears and wire being held firmly down by the offsets forming the hooks of the holding means 14. Any other form of surface that will accomplish the described ends will answer as well as that shown.
As a means for operating the clencher to effect the Work of clamping the sides of the trolley ear about the wire, as described, I may employ toggle levers 2021 on each side of the clencher pivotally connecting the inner ends of the said levers at their knee joint 22, pivoting the upper ends of the mem bers 20 on the clencher 11, as at 23, and pivoting the lower member 21 on the pins 24 supported in the casing- '1 he lower arms 25 of the levers 21 are extended through openings in the casing and are movable in said openings so as to bring them toward each other or in substantially parallel osition vertically and so substantially stra1ghten.the toggle levers 20 and 2'1, moving up the clencher ith powerful force against the edge 19 of the trolley-wire ear 16 and clenching said edges as before described, and as shown in Fig. 2. By separating the lower arms 25 of the levers 21, the knee joint of the toggle levers will be bent or broken and the clencher drawn down, all as will be entirely understood without further description.
'i-he clencher is provided centrally with guide slots 26 on its sides into which a guide 27, constructed as a rib on opposite sidesbf the casing, may enter, as the clencher 1S reciprocated to maintain the latter in true posltion.
Instead of employing to gle levers to re-' ciprocatethe clencher, as s own in Fig. 1, I may form teeth 28 on the sides of the central pendent portions of the clencher opposite the guide slot 26 and provide the upper inner arm of the lever 21 with teeth 29 suited to engage the teeth 28, so that b moving the faci'luated to effect the clenching as hcreinbefore indicated. But a portion of the car may be clenched on the wire at one time, the

It i'srecognized that the device shown may be altered or changed in the form and arrangement of its arts and features without departing from t e general nature or spirit of the same.
1. A trolle -ear clencher comprising a casing open at t e topand the sides of its upper edges formed asclamps to engage the sides of the ear astride of the wire and hold the same rigidly, a movable clencher supported and guided'by the casing and having a concave upper edge, and-means connected with the casing for moving the clencher upward against the edges of the ear held by the clamp and close or crimp the same closely around the wire.
2. A trolle -ear clencher comprising'a casing open at t e top and the sides of-its upper edges formed as clamps to engage the sides of the ear astride of the wire and hold the same rigidly, a movable clencher supported and guided by the casing and having a concave upper edge, and toggle-levers pivoted on the casing and clencher and means for operating the said toggle-levers, for moving the clencher upward against the edges of the ear held by the clam and close or crimp the same closely around t e wire.-
