Description

N IPETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPH ER, WASHINGTON. D C.,

tatt attut HORACE nfs-TWR'T,
for BMA'T'a'MlCt'IJGAN.
Laim Parent No. 87,722-, ma Mami 9, 1869.
The Schedule referred to -Iin these Lettere :Patent and making pat Of the Baine- To .all'whom it nia/y concer/n:
, Be it known tha I, HORACE P. STEWART, of Bath, in the county of C ihton, and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Shank for Boote and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure l being `a side or edge view of the shank, shown in the shoe.
Figure 2, a bottom View thereof.
Like'lettersI designate corresponding parts in both iigures.
The shank A is properly made of thin steel plate.
I make the instep-portion a convex on its lo'wer, or outer side, and correspondingly concave on its upper side, to receive the 4 usual filling of leather.
By this form, a proper degree of stiffness and elas ticity is obtained with the smallest quantity of metal. The convexA form is intended to be such as to conform to that portion of a sole Without a covering of leather,
"although, if desired, the outer sole may be extended over it, as indicated by the red line, iig. l.
From the instep to the forward end b, the shank is attened, to conform to that portion of the sole where it is secured under the outer sole. It is provided with a hole, j, for the insertion of a tack to hold it in place until the sole is sewed or pegged on.
The rear end e of the shank is formed to t the portion of the sole covered by the heel g of the boot or shoe, and is provided with a triangular or approximate form of aperture or notch, d, for securing the shank to the sole under the heel.
This aperture is such as to relieve the strain on the shank, and obviate its liability to break, and to allow a freer elasticity.
Thus I obtain a very superior shank in strength, lightness, and elasticity, and withal, one which allows the boot or shoe to be finished in better form, and with less expense. It is, in truth, superior in allfrespects to the usual form.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe improved metallioshank, having the instep-portion a' shaped to suit the finished form of the boot or shoe, when terminating at the heel-end, with the notch d, as and'for the `purpose herein specified.
The above specification signed by me, this 15th day of July, 1868.
. HORACE P. STEWART.
