Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that we, J ULIAN'G. GoonHUE and HUBERT K. HENRY, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaporizers for Disinfectants, of which the following is a full and correct specification, reference being had to the hereto accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 shows a vertical longitudinal central section of nearly every part of our de vice in working condition; Fig. 2 shows a transverse section of the tank in the upper part of our structure the same being taken on the cutting- plane 1, 1 of Fig. 1, a part of the said tank being shown broken away; Fig. 3 shows the flanged bottom of the device, a part of the same being shownbroken away.

The object of our invention is to produce a device of the character named which shall be easily controlled and be' as near as may be free from-the defects of similar devices now in use.
To attain said desirable ends we construct our said new device in, substantially, the following manner, namely; We provide a cylindrical shell or holder at proportioned substantially as shown and provide it with a flanged bottom support or ring a on which rests rotatably a bottom p provided with a flange 10 and diametrically opposite holes 1) and p and a notch g in said flange to receive the locking-bolt r. Onto said bottom is placed a flanged disk Z and on it a sheetmetal cylinder 1', open at both ends, and its sides covered with and supporting a wicking is and holding within a vessel or tank i provided with a cover having a central short stud or leg i and holes i. The shell may have notches m in its lower edge for the purpose of passing the fluid from i to the wicking 76 more freely. Said holder i is filled with a perfuming liquid which is absorbed into said wicking from which it then evaporates and passes through the numerous holes 0 in the shell or jacket a to perfume the air of the apartment. The tank i is filled with the perfuming liquid which is held by atmospheric pressure, or hermetically in said reservoir from which it is let out little by little through holes 01 through which air is let in whenever an air space is made below the plate containing the holes i so that a little air at a time may enter the tank i through said holes 1'. As soon as enough liquid runs out into the sealing-pan Z to raise the surface level of the liquid up to the said holes i the outflow from the tank i ceases until, again,
enough liquid has been evaporated fromthe' vessel Z to again admit air through the holes i into said reservoir, and so on constantly.
The tank I) is closed at both ends and contains a disinfecting liquid which is also held in place by atmospheric pressure; the airentrance being through the internal sidechamber 0 at the lower and open end of its downward extension 0 leaving a space f between the end of the part c and the bottom of the tank I). Said tank I) is filled'by laying on its side with the chamber 0 uppermost. When the tank is erected the liquid is airlocked and can only come up through the part 0 into 0 by allowing air to enter in under the-bottom edge of'c. This is accomplished by means of the siphon d which exhausts the liquid until its surface is below the lowerend of c and thereby opens a way for air to get on the inside of its wall and thus allow some of the liquid from the tank I) to fill up the lower part 0 far enough to check the entrance of more air, and so on continuously. In said case the lowering of the liquid-surface in the chamber 0 is effected by means of a siphond which empties into apipe eeither through the bore of said siphon or by means of a wicking r which fills the bore of said siphon to the desired degree so as to be aided by atmospheric pressure, or, where desirable, the atmospheric pressure may be dispensed with by removing a cork d from the bend of the siphon so that said wicking may act bymeans of capillary attraction only. The fragmentary pipe e is a part of the pipe e,which is, normally, or preferably, diametrically, opposite the stem g. Said pipe 0 is here shown brought around ninety degrees from said position so as to show it in connection with the siphon d in a side view so as to more clearly show the construction of said parts.
The relative positions of said parts 6 and g is, however, unimportant in any other way except as a matter of convenience because the bottom p may be turned to any position. The locking-stem 9 passes through a hole p and it is provided with a hole through which a pad-lock h is held, whereby said parts are locked to place.
7 The object of the arran ement of the holes p and p and the rotatable condition of the part 1) is to enable placing the pipe 6 so that it may drop its liquid into either the bowl or the urinal, as the case may be. I
The drawing shows that the upper end or head of the tank 1) projects beyond its sides, forming a flange, which projects from its sides and wherewith said tank is supported on the top edge of the holder a onwhich it may turn, axially, and the flanged part 19 is axially coincident with the tank I) and rotatable on the same axial line, therefore said parts may be placed so that the discharge pipe 6 may correspond to any desired radial direction. The parts q are lugs on the holder at through which nails or screws may pass for fastening the device to a vertical support.
What We claim is:
1. In a disinfecting apparatus the combination with a tank-holder and a tank in said holder provided with an interior side-chamber, open at its lower end and hermetically sealing said tank, of a siphon provided with a capillary core and a closable vent, in said chamber and a discharge pipe under the siphon-discharge and within said holder substantially asspecified.
2. In a disinfecting apparatus the combination with a cylindrical and foraminated tank-holder and an end-closed tank in its upper portion provided with .a side-opening closed by an inner chamber extending downward below said opening, and havin its lower end open, of a siphon in said cham er and a discharge-pipe under the siphon discharge fqnd within said holder substantially as speci 3. In a disinfecting apparatus the combination with a foraminated tank-holder, of
superimposed tanks therein, the upper tank provided with an interior open-bottomed side-chamber hermetically sealing its contents, said chamber provided with a siphon, and a discharge-pipe under the discharge of said siphon and in said tank-holder, the lower of said tanks hermetically sealed by a sealing-pan, wicking in said pan to evaporate its liquid and to pass the vapor thereof through said foraminations substantially as specified.
4. In a disinfecting apparatus the combition with a foraminated tank-holder, of superimposed tanks therein, the upper tank axially revoluble and having an interior openbottomed side-chamber and provided with a siphon, and a discharge-tube to the discharge of said siphon, said tube circumferentially adjustable in said holder, said lower I tank hermetically sealed with an evaporate ing-pan, adapted to form a liquid seal and containing a circular wicking substantially as specified.
