WALTER LOUIS VAN DE WIELE, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
POST-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed lliay 24. 1907. Serial No. 375.476-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER Louis V AN DE IVIELE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the City of Yonkers, in the county of I/Vestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders and particularly to that class known as post binders. The use of binders of this description is well understood and it is not thought necessary to enter into an explanation of their operation further than to state the principal requirement which is that any number of pages or leaves may be easily and quickly inserted, replaced or taken out without disturbing the remaining leaves. The object of this invention is to provide a locking device of simple construction and positive in its action which may be used in connection with the back of books for holding the leaves in place.
Other objects will be in part obvious and will in part appear hereinafter in connection with the device herein shown.
In the drawings accompanying this specification I have shown an operative embodiment of my invention as applied to a post binder having a pair of separable clamping sections which may be attached to the covers of the book.
In the several views like parts have been given similar reference numbers.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of clamping members embodying my invention adapted for use in a post binder. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, showing a locking device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a key for operating the locking device shown in Figs. l and 2.
At l is shown a lower clamping member and at 2 an upper clamping member. To one of these clamping members, preferably the lower member l, are attached posts 3, 3 which are adapted to form guides for the upper clamping member 2.
The upper clamping member 2 is preferably in the form of a flattened tube and is adapted to slide on the posts 3 and to be locked in position by means of a movable member 4 which is positioned within the upper tubular clamping member 2.
The movable member 4 is provided with tapered portions at each end thereof and with a rack at the central portion. Mesliing with this rack is a gear 5 which is provided with a square opening in the center, or other suitable means for turning .the same. A key, such as shown in Fig. 3, is provided for rotating the gear 5 thus causing the sliding member 4 to be moved so that the tapered portions at either end thereof lock the clamping member 2 to the posts 3, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.
The clamping members being pressed together upon the leaves and locked in position as above described will hold the same securely in place and by providing extensions for the posts 3 it will be seen that any .number of leaves may be accommodated in the same cover.
To unlock the device and release the leaves it is only necessary to insert the key and turn the gear 5 slightly, which causes the sliding member 4 to move out of engagement with the posts 3 and permit the `clamping members to be separated and the leaves removed or additional leaves inserted. The rack and gear construction for operating the sliding member 4 holds the same in its locked position until the gear is turned by a key or otherwise to move the sliding member as described.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention designed without departing from the scope thereof, I intend that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative merely of an operative embodiment of my invention and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is The combination in a loose leaf binder, of a pair of clamping plates, each of which is adapted to be connected to a cover-section, a pair of posts located upon one of said plates, one post being provided near either end thereof, the other of said clamping plates being hollow and having openings ynear either end. thereof adapted to receive said posts, a longitudinally movable locking plate located in said hollow plate, said locking plate having formed upon one of its edges at either end thereof similarly disposed inclined portions adapted for engagement with said posts, the opposite edge of said plate lying in contact with said hollow clam ing plate throughoutits whole extent, said ocking plate having rack teeth formed Signed at NeW York in the county of New York and State of New York this 23rd day 15 of May A. D. 1907.
