ELECTRIC SWITCH Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.'14, 1908.
Application filed March 9- 1907. Serial No. 361-589.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH DREWELL,
Emperor, residing at Germany, have invented control the branches of a divided circuit with a number of switches or interrupters which smaller than the number of the branches.
In certain connections which are already known there are switches whichcan operate simultaneouslyand which accordingly may be mechanically connected one with another. One part of these switches has moreover the characteristic feature that the one switchpole consists of a plurality of contacts which are insulated one from another when the switch is open, the other pole'on the contrary consisting only of one common piece. If the insulated contacts are connected when the switch-is open, shunts are. formed which are capable of disturbing the intended manner in which the switches should operate. An important object of the present invention is to remove this disturbing effect of the shunts. in all the branches of the circuit which are capable of forming shunts, said devices permitting the passage of anelectric currentin only one direction. Such a device is, for example, an electrolytic cell with an aluminium electrode, so-called valve-cell, or an arrangement in which a loose carbon contact is influenced by a polarized magnet or the like.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood reference is made to the accompanying drawing in which two connections In accordance with the present invention are shown diagrammatica 1y by way. of example in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to Fig. 1, a and b are branching points of the circuit in which the battery f is situated, to each of which points a series of three switches, c and (1 respectively, are connected. These switches are on the other hand connected with the individual branches 1 to 9 of the circuit, namely, each Improvements in Electric It is attained by inserting devices these C0118 being with one group of three branches. The branches 1 to 9 contain all the devices 0, valve-cells or other devices, which allow an electric current to pass in one direction only. Now in order that only one branch may receive current when two switches are closed, one switch being ata and one at b, the connection must be such that each group of branches, which for exam leis connected by one of the switches 0 tot e one pole of the source of current f, has one of the branches 1 to 9 in common with each of the grou s which are connected by the switches d to t e other pole of the source of current f. It follows from this, of course, that the grou s of branches at the switches c and 01 must e differently composed If two switches are closed, the one being at V4: and the other at d,
that branch which is common to the connected a and b and thus between the' oles of the source of current; this branch t 'erefore receives current. Shunt's however exist in this connection. For example, when the center switches c and d are closed, a current can on the one handass directly along the branch 5 from a to Further, the additional paths over the branches 4, 1, 2 and 6, 9, 8, for example, are possible for the current. These are shunt clrcuits, and in order to be able to pass them the current must flow in the branches 1 and 1). Consequently such shunt circuits are nullified when valve cells, or other are inserted in thebranches 1 to allow an electric current to direction (from a to 1)) only.
2 shows another connection employing llke means for nullifying shunt circuits. The switches g and h in Fig. 2 take the place of the switches c and d in Fi 1. The switches h are here dependent on t e switches g in such a manner that when one ofthe switches g (with the exception of the first) 9 which pass in one is closed, a switch It is simultaneously oper-' ated by the action of coils 'i, the circuits of closed by, the switches g. The branches I to XV of the circuit of the battery Z. are connected in groups with the switches -g and h. The groups of the branches are in this case soformed. and connected that each of the groups of branches which are connected to one of the switches g has one branch in common with all the devices (4,.
9 in a direction opposite to the normal direction frofn id to switch 9, the branch nected to the iexample branch "groups oi branches which are connected with .than that of vices were employed, there would be several shunts if anypair of the switches g is closed. For instance, if the second and switches g are closed,, the electric current might flow through the second switch-contact g to the branches the branch III and from here to thefifth of the switches'h, which is closed by the corresponding coil i confifth switch gj The-branches VI and'VII form further unintended shunts. To formany oneof the' shunts however it is necessary that the electric current canflow through one of the branches I to IXop'po-j site to'its normal direction. Theseshunts be avoided by: inserting in may therefore I to 'XV"de,vices 7a; through the branches which the electriccurrent canjpass in one;
