SHOW-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed July 17,1907- Serial No 884222.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osErH F. BIEREND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show- Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in show cases used in stores for displaying goods, the object of the invention being to produce such' a-show case as will be simple of construction, neat in appearance, and one which may be easily taken apart and packed for shipment without danger of injuring the glass and without taking up alarge quantity of space.
.This object I accomplish by means of a new and improved method of joining the corners of said case; also by such other and further construction as will appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved show case. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a line w w of Fig. 1 partly in perspective. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view partly in section showing a means of joining the front corners of the show case. Fig. 4 is a detached view of a metal corner joint. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of a top corner joint with its parts dissociated. Fig. 6 is sectional view taken on a line was of Fig. 5 but showing the parts joined. Fig. 7 is a rear end view of a bottom joint. Fig. 8 is a simi lar view partly broken out. Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken on a line y-y of Fig. 7. Fig. 10 is a sectional view taken on a line zz of Fig. 7.
Referring more particularly to the charactors of reference on the drawings 1 designates a supporting base. Held upward by such supporting base is the bottom glass retaining frame 2 while 3 is the top glass retaining frame, the same having side glass 4 and end glasses 5. The front corners of said glasses are joined in the following manner I I provide metal clamping members consist 1 ing of slotted members 6 and 7 adapted to receive the glass 4 and 5 respectively, the corners of said slotted members 6 and 7 meeting at right angles to each other, the inner ends of such members 6 and 7 being joined together by cross members 8 formed as a part thereof. In the corners formed by the meeting of the members 6 and. 7 I provide reinforcing rods 9, which rods fit into the bottom and top frames 2 and 3 and are provided at their lower ends with adjustment nuts 1.0. These nuts have no drawing power on the parts of the show case but are used to adjust the length of the rods 9, which fit very snugly into their places.
The back of the show cases are provided with suitable vertical corner brace members 11, the same being slotted to receive the glasses 5, the bottoms of said brace members being oined to the frame 2 by dove tails 12. In the back of the frame 2 are oblique slots 13 in which may be inserted screws 14 which extend into the dove tails 12 thus binding them to the frame 2. The tops of said members 11 are secured to the frame 3 by means of tenons 1.5 on the members 1.1 fitting into corresponding grooves 16 in the member 3 and by tenons 17 on the member 3 fitting into corresponding grooves 18 in the members 11, the whole being held in place by means of angle irons 19 screwed to the parts 3 and 11 as shown.
, The top glass 20 of the case is cemented to the frame 3.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have produced a show case that is well strengthened and yet one which may be easily taken down and packed for shipment. Also one which may be easily constructed and simple.
IVhile this specification describes in detail the present and preferred construction of the improved show case, still many deviations therefrom may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described a top and bottom glass retaining frame, glass therein, joining means for the front corners of said glasses comprising slotted members, the glasses fitted into such slots, the corners of said slotted members meeting at right angles, means joining the inner ends of said slotted members, and a reinforcing rod disposed in the corner formed by the meeting of such slotted members, and fitted into said top and bottom frames, as described.
2. In a device of the character described a show case comprising top and bottom glass retaining members, glasses therein, suitable rear supporting posts therefor, and front corner clamps for said glasses comprising tWo slotted members engaging said glass, the inner corners of said members meeting at right angles to each other, and a cross member disposed across from the inner end of each of said members and formed as a part thereof, as described.
3. A show case comprising top and bottom glass therein, rear corner posts dovetailed into the bottom retaining member and tenoned into the top retaining member, means securing them in such positions, join- 20 ing means for the front corners of said glasses comprising slotted members engaging said glasses, the corners of said slotted members meeting at right angles, means joining the inner ends of said slotted members, and a reinforcing rod disposed in the corner formed by the meeting of such slotted members, and fitted into said top and bottom retaining members, as described.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature 30 in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH F. BIEREND.
