Description

No. 87.637. l
J. F. CODDINGT-ON.
Harvester.
Patented March 9, 1869.
` UNITED'STATES PATENT OFFICE,
J OIEIN F. OODDINGTON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IM PROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 87,637, dated March 9, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. CoDDINGroN,
of Newark, in the county of Essex and Statev of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means of Operating Reels for Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a harvesting-machine fitted with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken in the line ao x of Fig. l.' Fig. 3 is a detached view of one portion of the apparatus.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention is to enable the chain or band employed to transmit motion to the reel of a harvester to be conveniently adjusted to the required tension, whether the reel be arranged to work at a higher or lower point upon the reel-post.
The invention, consists in the arrangement of an adjustable pulley and a socketpiece,
. slotted, or provided with a series of holes,
and attached to the reel-post, with reference to each other, to the reel, and a looped driving chain'or band, and a system of pulleys, in such manner that the object above indicated is effectually secured.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
The harvester itself may be of any ordinary or suitable construction, but, as shown in the drawings, is furnished at one end of its axle a with a pulley, A, the purpose of which will hereinafter presently appear.
The iinger-bar B and its adjuncts may be attached at the side of the machine in any appropriate way. At the inner end of the linger-bar B, by means of an adjustable cast ing, C, is secured the upright reel-post I), which carries the reel E, capable of adjustment thereon in the usual way, or in any other that may be preferred, the inner end of the central shaft, F, ofthe reel being furnish ed with a pulley, Gr. rIhe casting O is extended upward upon that side of the reel-p ost adjacent to the frame of the harvester, as shown more fully in Fig. 2, to constitute a socket-piece,
3, the axial support of the pulley I being made vertically adjustable in such slot by any ap propriate appliances. Providedv at the upper Vend of the socket-piece, at the back or rear' side thereof, and at a point above the pulley I, is another pulley, J, and at the lower end of the socket-piece, at the forward side thereof, is a similar pulley, K.
The chain or band L, which communicates the requisite rotary motion to the reel, is'` passed over the pulley G, on the end thereof,
down under the pulley K, just mentioned, and around the pulleyA on the end of the axle a,
and up over the pulley J, whence it is passed down under the adjustable pulley I in the looped form represented in Fig. 2.
Vhen the reel is raised or lowered to suit the requirements of any particular case, or when, for similar reasons, the reel, with its post, is thrown back or forward by means of the adjustable casting upon which the latter yis secured, the tension and position of the driving chain or band are materially changed; and in order to bring such band or chain to the tension required to operate the reel, it is only necessary to move and adjust the pulley I up or down, as the case may be, upon the socket-piece, and within' the loop formed as hereinbefore explained, by passing the chain or band under or around it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the adjustable pulley I and the socket-piece, slotted, or provided with a series of holes, and attached to the reel-post D, with reference to each other and to the reel E, the looped driving chain or band L, and the system of pulleys A J K Gr, sub-
