Description

No. 876,149. PATENTED JAN. '7, 1908. G. W. COOK.
BOTTLE GAP.
APPLICATION FILED APB-6,1907.
/6 lllllllll- /A Muses CHARLES W. COOK, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
BOTTLE-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed April 5. 1907- Serial No. 366.541.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. OooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Im rovernentsin Bottle-Caps, of which the fol owing is a specification.
My invention relates to bottle caps.
The ordinary bottle cap comprising a metal shell ada ted to be crimped around the mouth of t e bottle and a cork disk within said shell, is uite defective in that it permits leakage, which is largely due to the fact that the cork disk does not properly seal the mouth of the bottle.
A further defect of the ordinary bottle cap is that the shell is sufficiently springv so that it does not properly hold itself on the bottle mouth, which also permits leakage.
The present invention seeks to remedy the foregoing defects by the provision of a bottle cap having a shell provided with an off-set art which greatly strengthens the shell and, urther, by. the rovision, in connection with the improved siiell, of a gasket located between the off-set part of the shell and the crimped glart thereof adapted to bear against the mout of the bottle when the ca is applied and to be expanded by the app ication of the cap to the bottle and thereby made to very closely conform to the bottle mouth and produce a perfectly air-tight joint.
In carrying out the invention, I'provide a bottle cap shell having a central circular depressed or off-set part which defines a groove or channel between itself and the crimped part of the-ca and seat within the said channel, a plia le gasket, the s ec ific construction and arran ement of suc parts being set forth in detai hereinafter.
n the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a section of a bottle equipped with my improved cap;- Fig. 2, a detail plan of the cap; Fig. 3, a sectlon through the cap; Fig. 4, a bottom view of the cap; Fig. 5, details of the asket and Fig. 6, details of the facing.
The neck of an ordinary bottle is shown at 1, the same having the usual bead 2 at its mouth so that the cap may be crimped therearound.
The metal cap or shell 3 differs from those heretofore used in that it is provided with a central circular depression or off-set part 4, which has aninner inclined wall 5 defimn between said wall and the crimped part 6 o the shell or cap, a circular channel or groove 7.
Seated within the channel 7 is a gasket 8 of rubber or other soft and pliable material which is preferably provided with an annular ring or facing 9. This facing 9 is of tin-foil or sheeting. The facing 9 may be dispensed with if desired.
Normally the gasket 8 is of such width that it does not quite fill the channel 7, but when the cap is ap lied to the mouth of the bottle and crimpe around the bead 2, the bead 2 by its pressure against the gasket 8, expands it so that it conforms perfectly to the inner wall of the crimped wall 6 and to the wall 5' and also tothe bead 2, the arts being so constructed that a portion 0 I the gasket is forced against the inner surface of the bead 2. t
The depressed or off set part 4 gives the cap relatlvely enormous strength and prevents buckling and this insures a tight fit on the bottle mouth and prevents leakage or entrance of air in its association with the gasket 8, which forms an air-tight joint or seal with the mouth of the bottle.
The pliability of the covering 9, if used,
causes 1t to conform erfectly to every point of the surface of the ead 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is:
A bottle cap consisting of a shell having a depressed central part, an outer circular wall ada ted to be crim ed around the mouth of the ottle, said wal and de ressed part defining an intermediate annular channel, and an annular expansible asket lying in said channel and of less widtTi than-said channel which is adapted to be expanded by the action of crimping the ca on the bottle to form a seal, exposed to the uid within the bottle, between the cap and bottle month.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. COOK.
