TE LE PHONE-DIRECTORY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1807.
Application filed May 211907. Serial No. 37m n.
- To all whom it may concern:
The object of the invention is to provide a telephone directory and a case or housing for the same which is of durable construction and provided with parts so arranged that the telephone directory maybe easily and quickly operated to ascertain the number or address of a particular subscriber.
In the :u-companying drawingz- -ligure l is a front elevation of the directory. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of the sli The slip 1 is preferably cut from lineni'aced paper although any other suitable flexible material may be employedv The said slip is provided along its length and at one edge with the alphabetical indices 2 and adjoining blank spaces 3 upon which maybe entered the names and telephone numbers of those subscribers with whom it is desired to communicate at frequent intervals. A case for the said slip is provided which consists of the side pieces 4, l having the arcuate upper and lower portions :3, 5 s )aced apart. The shafts (i and 7 are journaled in the opposite arcuate portions 5, 5 and the ends of the slip l are attached to the said shafts and the said slip is adapted to be wound upon one shaft when unwound from the other and vice. versa. Each of the shafts is provided with a crank handle 8 or its equivalent for rotating the, same. The curved plates .1 lie over the upper and lower portions of the side pieces 4' and the backing plate 10 is secured to the rear edges of the said pieces -l-. The U-shaped plate 11 is attached to the adjacent edges of the arcuate portions 5 and the edges of'the side pieces 4 lying between the arcuate portions 5. The edges of the Li-shaped plate 11 are spaced from the curved plates 1). A bridge plate 12 extends across the space between the arcuate portions Sand is provided with flanges 13 wluch'lit behind the edges of Liio U-shaped plate 11 and edge flanges '14 which are attached to the edges of the arouate portions 5 and lie under the curved plates .1. The plate 12 is provided at its ends with the ilanges 15 which extend up over the intermediate portion of the said plate and form guides for the edges of the slip 1. .The slip 1 in passing from one of the shafts 6 or 7 to the other lies upon the bridge plate 12 and passes through the spaces between the edges of the curved plates 9 and theU-shapcd plate 11. The. door 16 is hinged to the bridge plate 12 and is adapted to lie over that portion of the slip 1 which rests upon the said bridge plate. Said door is provided with an opening which is covered by a glass 17 or other trans .arent material. The free end of the said (001' is provided with a catch 18 which is adapted to engage the end of the bridge plate 12 whereby the said door and its said transparent plate may be held fiat against the slip 1. It will be seenjthat, the arcuateportion 5 of the side pieces 1 and the curved plates 9 and the end section of the U-shaped plate 11 form'eompertinent-s about the intermediate portion of the shafts 6 and 7 and as the said compartments are substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section they form receptacles for the rolls of the slip wound upon the said shafts.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that when a particular subscriber is desired, one of the shafts 6 or 7 is rotated and the slip 1 is carried over the bridge plate 12 until the index letter 2, corresponding with the initial letter of the subscribers name, is exposed through the transparency 17; when the shaft is rotated at a. slower rate of speed until the subscribers name desired is brought to view. Thus, a means for quickly supplying the telephone number of the particular subscriber is provided The advantage gained by having the bridge plate 12 passing from one receptacle 9 to the other and through the openings thereof is that a suitable backing is provided for the strip 1 which permits of entries being readily made upon the strip. Also the strip is protected from wear at the edges of the openings in the receptacles and the edges of the stri are protected by the flanges at the ends oi the. bridge plate 12. The bridge plate is positively held in place by the flanges 13 which engage the inner sides of the receptacles 9. I
Having described my invention what i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is:-
A directory such as described comprising receptacles spaced apart and having opposite openings, shafts journaled for rotation in said receptacle, a plate bridging the space between the receptacles and the openings thereof and having at its sides flanges which pass through said openings and lie against the inner sides of the rece tacle, said plate also having at its ends anges which are bent back over the intermediate portion of said seams l plate and a strip Winding upon the shafts and passing through the openings in the receptacles and l'ying upon the bridge plate with 15 its ed es thereo In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have heretoaffixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
