Description

. .1. GovE. v StreebCar Dr'aw- Bar.
Patentd March 2, 1869.
N, PETERS.4 Phniu-Lithographer. Washngon. D. C.
JOHN-c.. GovE, or CLEVELAND, onto.
Letters Patent No. 87,486, lated March 2, 1869.
IMPROVD STREET-CAR DRAW-BAR.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. GOvE, of Cleveland, mV the Ycounty of Cuyahoga, and in the State oi' Ohio, have nlivcuted certain new and useful Improvements in `Street-Cars and do hereby declare that the ibllowing car, which will protect both the horses andcar from injury resulting from a sudden start orstoppage.
'In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myv invention appel-talus, to make and use the same, l
`will now proceed to describe its constrnctioi'i and operation, referring;l to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specication, audin which- Figure l is a bottom view of the platform of a cnr, showing my invention applied to the same, and
Figure 2 is a side viewin section, of the front end.'
A represents the platform of a `street-car, and
`B is the beam forming the sill of the car.
On the under side of said platform, a suitable distance from the centre, and on each side thereof, is a cross-bar, C', extending the whole width of the platform. l
Between these bars C C is placed a frame, D, which projects in front ofthe platform, forming there a rounded bumper, as shown in the drawings.
'lhis frame is held up i-n proper position by one r more bars, 19 secured to the cross-bars C C; and near the front ends of thc same is placed a roller, F, to facilitate the motion of said frame forward and backward.
The roller F is placed in journal boxes on the lower side of the bars C C, and the front end of the frame `D rests on it, being, at that end, provided with metal plates, Gr G, to prevent the wearing'of the same.
'The draw-iron H passes through the frame D, and through the sill B, as shown in iig. 1.
)n said draw-iron are placed two rubber springs, I I, one Vbetween the rear end of the frame D andthe sill B, and vthc other in rear of said sill, the draw-iron being secured by incansof a washer, a, and pin, b, as seen in iig. 1.
[t will' now `be seen that, when the horses start the car, the tongue being secured to the front end of the draw-iron H, there will notbe that dead pull, asis usually the case, for the rear spring, l, will rst be acted upon beibre the car is operated upon.
In like manner, when the car is backed or taken into the car-house, and strikes against anything, the
front spring will protect it from injury that else would be occasioned by the too sudden shock.
The frame D is, at the front end, where it forms, as
described, thc rounded bumper, covered with a metal plate, c, which also extends, on top, backward, projecting above and over the front edge ofthe platform A, protectiingr the frame and draw-iron from dirt, Sac.
l ain aware that the thaw-heads of steam railroadcars'have been provided with rubber -on their ends hcretoin'e.
My invention is intended especially for cars drawn by horses, to facilitate the starting of the saule.
The arrangement of the sliding frame D, rounded atits ibi-ward end, roller F, draw-iroli H, rubber springs I I, and washer ce, with the platibrm' A and sill B ofa street-car, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing, l have herenuto sot my hand, this 12th day of September, 1868. Witnesses: JOHN G. GOVE.
