Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed June 8. 1907. Serial No. 377,844:-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES G. Foons, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improvement in toys, having in view the provision of means for the amusement and instruction of children, as well as for the entertainment of adults.
The invention essentially consists of a number of flat strips or objects each preferably havin on the front face thereof the picture of a so dier which are pivotally supported on a board and adapted to be stood up in substantially an upright position. Near one end of the board removed from and facing the objects, is provided a post or other equivalent su port connected to a projectile through tie intermediary of an elastic cord, the projectile serving, when drawn against the tension of the cord and properly aimed, to knock the strips or objects down.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the board and one of the strips or objects on an enlarged scale, illustrating the nature of the pivotal connection therebetween, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the rear end of the board.
The invention comprises a board 10 of suitable extent, preferably provided with aborder or railing 11 surrounding the rear portion thereof on its upper face. At the forward portion of the border 11, the board pivotally supports a plurality of objects 12, preferably in the form of flat strips having the pictures of soldiers or other equivalent representations thereon. The pivotal connection between the objects 12 and the board is preferably effected by screwing into the rear face of the object at opposite sides and near its bottom, screw eyes 13, each of which is engaged by the angularly turned upper end of a wire support 14, the bottom of said support being secured to the board by means of a base flange 15. The strips or objects as herein shown and as best represented in Fig. 3, are arranged in two rows with the objects of one row located in the interval between the objects of the other row. This disposition of the objects admits of a maximum number being placed on the board, but prevents the edges thereof from en aging each other and thus interfering with their independent pivotal movement as would be the case should the objects present an unbroken line.
At or near the forward end of the board 10, a post 16 is detachably secured by passing it into an aperture in the board and thereafter v engaging its embedded end with the point of a screw-eye 17, the latter being threaded into the board from the adjacent end and servin as a means for suspending the toy from a na' or other like device when it is not in use. The top of the post 16 is connected with a projectile 18 through the intermediary of an elastic cord 19, the said projectile acting, when drawn forwardly against the tension of the cord and properly aimed, to knock one or more of the objects down from a substantially upright position, as shown in Fig. 1.
The construction of the toy is obviously such that it will stand considerable rough treatment without becoming deranged, and may be packed within a small compass by turning the objects down and detaching the post 16.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a toy, a board, a plurality of objects, each comprising a flat strip having screweyes afiixed to its rear face, and wire supports attached to said board having angularly-turned ends engagiin said screw-eyes.
In testimony whereof F have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES e. FUoHs.
Witnesses:
