RAILROAD-RAIL.
' I I Specification of'Letters Patent.
Patented Dee 24, 1907.
application filed Jam 2a 1907'. SerialNO. 364,653.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER MCCAFFERTY, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Butte, in the county ofSilverbow, State of. Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Rails; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it" appertains to make and-use the same. v
This invention relates to railroad rails, and more particularly tothat class known as compound rail-s, Thefact that such rails must be formed in such a manner that the sections composing the same will be rigidly and securely held in relative vposition is readily appreciable, -and hence the object of my. invention is to' produce a] railxof this class of such construction that it will satisfy this condition. e p
Broadly speaking, the rail embodying my invention comprises a pair of sections,
namely-abase sectionand a tread section,
and the tread section includes a kerfed flange in which a flange, formed upon the base, section,- isreceived, the flanges of the two sections being bolted together in this position.
In carrying out myinvention theopp'osing sides of the kerf in the flange upon the tread portion are converged upwardly and the flange upon the base portion is also ta ered upwardly and is ada ted to be snug y received in the kerf, it. eing understood thatthe initial passage of ajtrain over the track will serve to wedge the two sections together and to prevent their movement. with respectto each other: 1 In theaccompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of rail constructed in accordance with my invention,"
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view takentransverselythrough the rail before the bolts are applied, and, Fig. 3 is asimilar view showing the relation of therail sections after the bolts are applied v Referring more specifically'to the drawings, the rail is shown as being formed of a portion which is oftheusual form and a or bifurcated as at 8, the walls of the kerf or bifurcation being converged. upwardly as clearly shown in F gs. 2 and 3. Formed integral with the base section- 6 is an upstanding flange 9, the'side faces of which are converged upwardly so that in-reality the 'fiange is a tapered one.
Formed through the flange 9 is an opening 10 and openings 11 are formed through the spaced portions of the flange 7. As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing these openings only aline when the tread section is in proper position upon the base section and as the flange 9 is very snuglyreceived in the bifurcation or kerf of the flange 7, the tread portion is to be pressed down upon the base portion until the openings 10 and 11 do aline after which bolts 12 are'e'ngaged through the openings and serve veryeflectually to 'revent the separation of the sections forms in the rail. Furthermore, the fact that the tread section is'so snugly received upon the base section renders itobviou's thatjthe bolts 12 will be considerably relieved of strain.
In forming a length of rail from my secdepending integral flange 7 which is kerfedtions, each tread section is placed directlyoverthe junction, of the two-base sections,
the isaid bifurcated flange being provided with bolt openings which aline, the bifurcaas clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the bolt open- 1 tion in the flange of the tread section being engagement through the openings at such of such dimensions as to completely receive time. p, v the upstanding flange of the base section only" In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, when initial pressure has been applied upon in presence of two witnesses.
