UNITE. srarss PATENT OFFICE;
GEORGE D. EVANS, OF SHARON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO AMERIC-AN SHEET & TIN PLATE OOMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
METHOD OF OPENING PACKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Be it known that I, GEORGE D. EVANS, of Sharon, Mercer county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Method of Opening Packs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing one form of apparatus for carrying out my invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectionalview of the same.
My invention relates to the method of 1 opening or separating the plates or sheets of a heated pack by applying a cooling fluid or liquid thereto as set forth in the application of Charles W. Bray, N 0. 362,888 filed March 18th, 1907.
My invention is designed to provide a sp 3- cifie improvement in the said process, such improvement consisting in fee( ing the pack into and out of a tank of cooling liquid, such as water.
In the drawings, 2, 2 represent a air of rel ducing rolls from which the pack s ides over the guide 3, and upon a pair of roller chains 4, 4 movable over sprocket wheels 5 on shafts 6,- 6. These chains are located in a water bosh or tank 7, which may be of any desired shape or size, and is provided with an inlet pipe 8 and an overflow pipe 9. T hose pipes maintain the water level at substantially that shown, so that as the pack shown at 10 is carried along bythe roller chains it will be below the level of the water and be carried through the bath. driven in any suitable manner,.as for example, by a shaft 11 having a clutch driving device 12, and provided with a pinion 13 engaging a pinion 14 on a stub shaft 15, which in turn engages a toothed wheel 16 on the- This sh. ft 6 at the front end of the tank is provided with a toothed wheel 17 engaging a toothed wheel 18 on a shaft 19 mounted in bearings 19 bolted to the side with a feed-out roller 20 which coacts with a feed-out roller 21 on the front sprocket shaft 6. From the feed-out rolls the guides 22 extend upwardly and outwardly to feed rollers or any suitable mechanism for carrying the i l The chains may be The shaft 19 is provided lmetal forwardl Intermediate guides 23 Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
and 24 may be provided for the chains in the upper and lower paths of their travel.
In carrying out my process, the ack is fed forwardly from the reducing rolf; 22, and slides over the guide into the water bosh and upon the roller chains. The roller chains carry it forwardly through the water bath,
where the unequal expansion and contraction of the inner and outer layers cause a drawing or pulling of the layers upon each other, which loosens the lies. The pack is then fed forwardly into t e feed-out rollers, and is preferably passed forwardly to a doubling a paratus not shown, or it may be fed forwar The advantages of my invention result to any other desired apparatus.
from the passing of the pack into and out of a water bosh orbath. The sudden chilling of the exterior layers of the water, and the excess of water to the side edges of the pack greatly assist in loosening and opening the pack layers.
Many variations may be made in the form and arrangement of the tank or bosh, the means for feeding in and out, &c., without departing from my invention.
' claim:
1. In the manufacture of sheet metal, the method of opening or loosening the sheets of a pack, consisting in rolling a heated pack and then sub'ectm the heated lpack to a cooling liqui bat substantial y. as described.
- 2. In the manufacture of sheet metal, the method which consists in rolling aheated pack, and then feeding the heated pack through a bath of water; substantially as described. I
3. In the manufacture of sheet'metal, the method which consists in rolling a heated pack, then subjecting the heated pack to a liquid bath, and thereafter reducing the plates or sheets by further rolling in packed form; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
GEO. D. EVANS.
