arranged horizontally for lateral or horizontal swinging movement and pivoted intermediate its ends upon a vertical pivot 3 arranged in a standard or support 4 upon a base 5. The lever 2 is actuated in one direction by the usual spring 6 and the usual contact and stop screws are arranged upon the base 5 to co-act with it. Since these devices form no part of the present invention it is thought that detailed description is unnecessary. At one end of the key lever 2 is a finger piece 7 which in the practice of my invention I remove and substitute therefor my improved'attachment 8. The latter is here shown in the form of an arched bar of such shape as to readily span the operative parts of the instrument on its base 5 and provided at its opposite ends with two finger pieces 9, 10 which are similar to the finger piece 7. The finger piece 9 is adapted to take the place of the finger piece 7 on the ordinary machine and it is attached to the key lever by suitable fastenings 11, as shown in Fig. 2. When so attached'the other finger piece 10 will be disposed upon the opposite side of the machine but in the same position or relation thereto as the finger piece 9.-
From the foregoing it will be observed that when the finger piece 10 is held in the left hand and given the same motion as that given by the right hand to the finger piece 7 of the original machine or to the finger piece 9 of the attachment, the same motion will be given the key lever so that the instrument may be operated by the left hand without reaching the same over the top of the machine as is necessary without the attachment. It will be understood that the form, proportion and construction of the device may be varied to permit of its usecupon machines of other form than the one illustrated and that I do not limit myself to the precise showing herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a telegraph instrument having a key lever projecting from one side of the same, of an operating member carried by the key lever and arched to span the instrument, whereby the latter may be operated from its side opposite that from To all whom it may concern, I
Be it known that I, JOHN P. KINNEY, a j citizen of the United States, residing at Pocatello, in the county of Bannock and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telegraph-Keys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in telegraph keys or transmitters and more particularly to an attachment by means of which the key lever may be given the same motion with the left hand as with the right.
In all automatic sending machines now on the market, and particularly those known as the Mecograph and the Simplex, the key lever can only be operated by the right hand. If the left hand is used the stroke given the lever must be reversed or the left hand must be reached over the instrument so that the key is held and operated in the same manner and direction as if it were held in the right hand. To reach over the machine or instrument in this manner and hold the arm above the machine is very tiring upon the operator, and the object of my invention is to provide means whereby the key lever may be operated from either side of the machine by either hand. This object I attain upon such a machine as the Mecograph by substituting for the ordinary finger piece upon the key lever an arched operating member which spans the instrument and has finger pieces at either end.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the well known form of telegraph transmitter, illustrating in dotted lines the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail trans verse section through the instrument with the attachment applied thereto; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment.
