Description

No. 874,556. PATENTED DEC. 24, 1907. J. HVAK IN & G. G. ANDERSON.
METAL R ILWAY TIE. APPLICATION FILED APR. 30, 1907.
1 nderson JOHN-H. .nnx AND CHARLES e.
METAL Reine A D E Pm UN, OF
onnsron, IOWA.
To all whom it may co mic/v1:
Be it known that we, doing vl-l'. 'AKIN and (,nunacs (7. ANnnnsoN, citizens of the United States, TUSitlil'ltI at trcston, in the count}; of
Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful lm1movements in Metal Railway-'lies; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
()ur invention relates to new and useful .inip'rovr-niimds in metallic rail ties and our object is toprovide means forsecurclvclampin; the rails upon the ties.
A further object is to provide means to hold the rails a predetermined distanee apart.
A still further object is to provide a brace member between the ties for supporting the rails.
.Other objects and advent-inns will he hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the clain'is.
.ln the accompanying drawings which are 21. part of this application Figure] is a p rspective view of a section of railway track showing a pair of our improved ties in usev Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the track way. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one of the ties applied to usefand l ig. t is a detail perspective view of a locking, bar crcpl'oyed for securing the parts of the tie together.
, Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views 1 and lndicate the usual form of rai.s employed in connection with railway tracli's and .l indic ates our improved form of metallic tic, each of said ties preferably consisting of two l tions 4 and 5 and the sections are preferably forn'led of angle iron and when so constructed one wing ofcach. of the angle irons is disposed in a horizontal position while the opposite wing thereof is in a vertical position so that the two vertical portions will abut against each other.
Eaeh of the vertical portions of the sections l and 5 is provided with a pair of notches 6 and 7-respectivelv which are lo (sated at the proper distance from each end of the tie to receive the rails l and 2, and eaeh of the notches is provided with overhanging lips and 9 respectively, which are Specification of Letters Patent.

When the locking liar 's placed in position, the extension 'l-l engages the protruding end of the section 5 while the binding nut engages' the proiruduu end of the section 4, so that when the nut s turned home on the threaded went. with one edge of the while the lips?) will be drawn tion with the opposite side of "it thereby positively lock i tie, and at the same time anceapart. reel; the sections into eh the base tilt! the -r and relievethe locking bar ere-bis distance apart, we provide supporting beams hich e: 1 ength wise of the rail end h c ends resting upon the horizontal igs of the sections l and'5, said beams COIL 1g of parallel verticomiccted together and by means of a hori- 7 Y wall 22 being we: ends of tlic'walls 21 U in which the base of the l projecting portions of the vngagi g the opposite or gas of the thereby holding the siipportin' It wil the tics can oc spaced a cc and the beams i o pm ng the rails instead of ddi at number of ties, and .ails will be posiwalls 21 r base and i beams inposition oclow the rails. thus seen that considerable dists ding, or in fact any ions of the ties are u, soon that the parts of the V g id in position below 25 the rails d the sections thereof firmly locked togcther.
1i lhe combination with railway rails, of
s supporthig tic, said tic consisting of angular section; said sections hav' lg notches therein,
so Y, en of said notches and means to ips in to engagement with the rail. o of the class described comangular sections, the vertical portion sections having notches in the upper tchcs adapted to be directed into nch with the base of the rails, a betw en the meeting faces of said LlOllb opted to move said sections longiudinsl F osit-e directions and the lips with rails.
described rail tie cornmotel and portions thereof vertical, trio vertical sections having a pair of notch s i is upper thereof, lips at the end of suit notches and means to move said sections lon itudinally in opposite directions 1, portions of said section'sto engage one end of one of the sections and means at the opposite end thereof to engage the end of the o posite section, whereby said sections may lie moved longitudinally in opposite directions.
5. The herein described rail tie com prising a pair of angular sections the meeting faces of which are provided with registering channels, notches in said sections adapted to receive rails, lips at the ends of said notches, a locking bar scated in said channels an angular extension at one end of said oar adapted to engage the end of one section, a binding nut for the opposite end of said bar adapted to engage the oppositc end of the other section wherebywhen the nut is directed on to said bar, the sections will bemoved longitudinally and in oapositc directions, and a ortion of said lips into engagement witi said rails and means to lock said sections in their adjusted position.
6. The combination With a railway rail of means to support the same comprising ties forrncd'of angular sections, means to secure the ties to the rails, and supporting beams adapted to rest on the horizontal portions of the tie, and having a cavity in their upper faces to receive the base of the rail. f
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
