It will be noted that there are several characteristic features in this i'urnace, namely: The fumes pass u through the mass of ore andthence out t ou h the hooded fumeapertures; the'outlet ior the solid products ofthe reduction is alined with the chamber of'the furnace, and the regulating means -at this outlet constricts the latter axially; that is, the outlet when reduced is still axially alined, or'substantially so, with the furnace chamber.
Having thus described my invention, I
1. A furnace for the reduction of zincbearing ores, having an elongated furnace body open at both ends, one open end serving for the admission of the ore and the other servin as an outlet for the solid products of the reduction, means for axially constricting the aline'd outlet of the furnace, means for feeding the material in the ore-chamber of the furnace from the receiving to the discharging end, and means for producing an electric arc in the ore-chamber, said chamber having in its walls fume-apertures dis osed between the reduction point and the chargend of the furnace and extending from the ore-chamber obli uely outward and toward the receiving en of the chamber.
2. A furnace for the continuous reduction of nine-bearing ores, comprising an elon gated, uprightfurnace-body, havmg in it an ore-chamber with fume-apertures in its walls, and an alined outlet at its bottom for the solid products of the reduction, and means for producing an electric arc to extend transversely across the ore-chamber below the fume apertures, means for axially constricting the outlet at the bottom, and means in the ore-chamber for forcing the ore downward therein. a 1
3. A furnace for the reduction of zincbearing ores, havin an elongated, upright furnacebody, provir led with a recess 6 in its walls and outlets 7 therefrom for the fumes, means below said recess for producing a transverse electric arc in the furnace, and an outlet below for the solid products of the reduction, said outlet being provided with means for constricting it from opposite sides.
4. A furnace for the continuous reduction of ores containing a vapo lzable metal, consisting of an elongated furnace-body having fume-outlets in its walls, means for feeding the ore through the furnace, means for producing an electric arc in the furnace for re-' ducmg the ore, and means for constricting the outlet of the furnace, said means c0nsist ingof the hinged sections 1 1, and means for pressing themtogether for reducing the area of the outlet.
5. A furnace for the purpose specified,
having an elongated furnace-bod disposed with its axis upri ht and provi ed with a fume-recess 6 and me-outlets 7 therefrom,
