To all whom 'it naa/yy concern:
Be it known that We, EUGENE D. C. BAYNE and LAWRENCE A. SUBERs, Acitizens of the United States, and residents of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Machines for Coating the Fibrous Strands of a Thread and also the Twisted Thread, of Which We hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and p our invention are to provide automatically acting mechanism for preparl ing the thread from -Which an unWoven fabric may be formed having the lqualities of great flexibility and tensile strength combined with perfect freedom from internal friction of the threads and their fibrous strands upon each other. To accomplish these objects the thread is rst momentarily untwisted to separate the fibrous strands from each other,
these strands are then coated With a nonfibrous coating of tenacious material such as india rubber 'which is dried upon them and they are then twisted together again to form al thread, this thread is then provided with an exterior coating of the same material whichA is also compressible and preferably vulcanizable and retains a tenacious surface by means of which the several threads of the fabric are attached together at the time of making the same. i The coating when of the required `ers into a perfect cylindrical shape so that the as to pre thickness is compressed between forming rollfabric can be accurately made, and the layers thereof formed evenly and smoothly and to facilitate this end the threads are applied with pressure. The mac ine also includes in its construction arotatable cylinder containing a bath through which the momentarily separated fibrous strands are passed, and having perforated heads throughwhich the several. strandsare guided to hold them apart, While being coated.
Further features of the invention are shown such as the operating gears and shafts by means of which the cylinder is rotated to momentarily untwist and retwist the thread, and to revolve the forming rollers by means of which the coated thread is pulled through the perforations in the cylinder heads, and the coating is shaped into cylindrical form.
The invention further'comprises the combination and arrangement of part-s and construction of the various details as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing one side in vertical section of the complete device; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is va transverse section of the rotatable cylinder.
In these views 1 is the frame upon which is mounted the spool 2 upon `Which the thread 3 is Wrapped, 4 is a cylinder containing a bath of the india rubber or other coat- 'ing substance. This cylinder is provided Vith ahead 5 and a bottom 6 perforatedat 7 for the passage of the ,separated fibrous strands whichv compose the thread.
The threadvis first passed through a cen tral guide S and the several component strands are passed through the openings in the head and bottom, and are brought together again underneath .the bottom and =are retwisted by the rotation of the cylinder 4. The cylinder is rotated by means of the gears 9 and 10, and shaft 11, and intermedi'- ate gears 12 and 13 and shaft 14. After passing through the cylinder the, coated strands are dried prior to retvisting by means of an air blast assing through the drum 15 and the threa is held While tvvisting by means of the grooved rollers 16 and 17 below.`
The thread is passed vertically after being twisted through a bath 18 of similar coating material,'and is then drawn through a reduced outlet nozzle 18 of the size required to provide the proper thickness of coating. The thread thus provided with an exterior coating is then dried by passing it through an air blast 19, and'finally the coating 2O is condensed and shaped into perfect cylindrical form by means of theforming rollers 16 and 17 which serve also las a feed device lo pull the thread through the perloratirms in the cylinder.
