To all whom 'itmayconcem:
Be it known thatI, JOHN J. RooNEY, av citizen of 't'.lie'mIInited-States,A residing at Scarsdale, -in the( county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Lam -So'ckets, of'
"which the following is a `full, c ear, concise,
:which will be simpler and durable in construction.. and cheap to manufacture and wherein" all conductingfparts will be thor'- ou hl-y insulated. Such a socket-is es e-f4 cia ly suitable .for lamps' which are used or decorating Christmas trees or similar 'puroses, -as'all conducting parts are rotected rom contact'with lextraneous ob]ects. In orderto decorate a Christmas tree with elec-r tric lights it has been the practice to place a multiplicity of incandescent lamps' u on a main conductin cordwhich is adapte to be. run around the ranches of the tree in such'a manner a's to pro erlydistribute the lamps.
In order to ful y explain my invention, I shall describe the preferred form thereof, which-is illustrated in section in the accom#- vpan7 ing drawing.
' T e socket which is shown mathe drawing. isl preferably provided with an insulating tubular casing or sheath' 1 within'whichis 1- 35 arrangedan outer contact or conducting shell 2', said contact being firmly held in position in 'said casing by any suitable means. The outer contact is preferably' screwthreaded to receive a lamp base 3.whi ch carries a lamp 4. The louter contact-2 preferably supports an insulating block 5 which carries an inner-contact 6. The casing is preferably closed at its rear end by means .of a bushing or cap 7. The bushing is preferably provided with a tubular. shank 8, which extends A-into the casing. The inner and outer conta-cts are preferably permanently'v connected to insulated terminal cords ory conductors-9 which extend through the bushing 7.' These cords maybe attached to 'said contacts b means of solder.
An insu ating filler Y1() is preferably placed Within the v rear portion ofthe casing to insulate the terminal cords from each other and also to kunify parts of the structure ofithe lampgj f It will be understood 'that the structure illustrated in thedrawing may be modified without departing from my invention as .defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters lPatent is:
' 1.vl As a` new article of manufacture, an incandescent lamp socket, comprising v a piece of' cylindrical tubing open at both ends, .a conducting shell threadedv to receive a lamp baseand fitting within said tube, the
endsof saidtube being extended beyond the ends of said shell, an insulating base mounted in the bottom of said shell, an inner contact carried by said base, `a cap' or'bushing mount'- ed upon the rear end of said tube, conductors extending through said bushing, one attached to said inner contact and the other to-said shell, andsolid insulatin material filling in the rear portion of said tu e to hold the parts of the sockets in position and insulate con-l ducting parts.
2.V As a new article of manufacture, a lamp socket, comprising a cylindrical tube of insul-ating material, a conducting shell threaded to receive a lam socket and fitting Awithin said tube, said -tu e beingprolonged beyond the ends of said shell, anlnsulatlng piece mounted .in the bottom of said shell, an lnner contact carried by .said insulating piece, a bushing arranged upon the rear end ofsaid tube, said bushing having a .shank fitting into said tube and a bead or flange engaging the rear end of said tube, conduc- `tors passing through said bushing, one attached to' said inner contact and the other to said contact shell, anda solid insulating l material filling the rear Qrtion of said tube and said bushing to hold) parts of the socket in osition, and lnsulate conducting parts.
n Witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in thepresence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. RooNEY. Witnesses:
