Be it known. that I, ALBERT S. JANIN, a
' citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Clifton, borough of Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Electric Trolley, of which the following is a full, clear, and-exact description. This invention relatesto trolleys, and it consists substantially in the details of construction and combinations of parts herein ground systems, and one. ofthe principal ob.- jects of theinvention is to provide a device of this kind-of an embodiment overcoming numerous disadvantages and objections encountered in the use of many other contrivances hitherto devised for similar purposes.
A further object is to provide a device of a the character mentioned which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, besides being thoroughly effective and reliable in o eration, and possessing the capacity for ong-and repeated service. b I
The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure l is a view in perspective showing my improved trolley device as mounted upon the top portion of a car in operative relation with an' overhead conductor for supplying ar ed electric current thereto; Fig. -2 is an e I part sectional view in detail, of the rotatable contact-member of the trolley and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side view showing more clearly the construction and organization of the parts comprising my improved trolley.
Before. proceeding with a more detailed description, it may be stated that in the form of my improvements herein shown, I employ a metallic structure comprising a special base by which to secure the structure to the top of the car, and disposed upon which, at opposite sides thereof, are duphcate sets of spindles or other means upon which are ro- Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Y tatably mounted the lower ends of the lower members of duplicate sets of specially constructed upwardly disposed toggle-levers,
the upper members of which are articulated with said lower members, and also with each other at their upper ends, at which ends said upper members of the sets of said levers are provided with bearings or supports for the spindle'of a specially'constructed rotatable contact-member (trolley), which I employ for maintaining a constant electrical connection, with the overhead conductor of the railway system, thus to supply the electric cur rent to the motor on the car for propelling the latter; Special means are employed tending'at all times to force the upper and lower members of the two sets of toggle levers together and upwardly, thereby tofmaintain effective contact of the contact-member (trolley) with the overhead conductor, the said lower ends of the said lower members of the two sets of toggle levers being suitably connected together for effective operation of the structure, as will presently be explained.
The construction and organization of the parts of my improved device are such that the wear of said parts, .as well as that produced upon the electric conductor of the railway system, is reduced to a minimum, thus obviating frequentchanges or substitutes for the contact-member (trolley). Moreover,
.the contact-member (trolley) which. I employ is not apt to leave the conductor at whatever speed the car may be moving, and whenever the-car is switched from one tracksection of the railway system to another or branch section, the said contact-member in virtue of the special construction thereof en-. ables the conductor for the one section of railway to readily leave the contact-member at one of its ends, while the other end of said contact-member glides with equal facility be neath the conductor-of the' branch section, thus requiring practically no special handlin or manipulation of the device on the part 0' the operator. Special means are employed, however, by which the contact-member may be lowered or otherwise manipulated by the operator on the car, through the medium of a rope or cable extending from the top of the car at one end. The contact-me1riber or trolley proper is formed with special means whereby the same may be lubricated at the bearing-portions thereof, and the entire embodiment of my improvements is such as to give the best results in practice.
Reference being had to the drawings by the designating characters thereon, 1 represents the top of an ordinary railway car 2, mounted upon which is a metal base 3 of any desired form or shape, but shown herein as rectangular. Said. base is secured to the upper surface of the top of the car by means of screws 4, or in any other suitable way, and
adjacent to the opposite side-edges 5 thereof,
are oppositely disposed bearings 6, in each of which are rigidly mounted duplicate screws or spindles 7, on which in turn are rotatably mounted intermeshing pinions 8 and 9,
which are rigid with the lower ends or extremities of sets of reversely disposed lower members 9 of toggle-levers 10, the sets of upper reversely disposed members 11 of which cross or overlap each other at their upper ends, as indicated at 12, said ends beingpro vided with corresponding openings (see Fig. 2) for the support of journals, such as indicated at 13, at the ends of a transversely disposed shaft or spindle 14, which is provided a suitable distance from the extremities thereof with oppositely disposed cones, su ch as indicated at 15, cooperatively associated with which are the heads 16 of an elongated hollow cylinder 17, said heads being reduced at their inner extremities as indicated at 18, thus to form collars to which the ends ofthe cylinder 17 are fitted flushly, and secured to the heads in any suitable manner, as by means of screws indicated at 19. The said cylinder 17 is .of metal, as are all the other parts of my improved structure, and it will 7 ,from the surfaces of the hereinbefore-mentioned cone 15, thus to provide a race for the accommodation of anti-friction balls 21, see more especially the enlarged detail, Fig. 2. The outer end or base of the cone is separated from the inner one of the adjacent upper crossed ends of one set of the upper members 11 of the toggle-levers referred to, while each journal 13 of the shaft 14 may also be provided with an outer washer 13*, the severallyrecited parts being held in proper assemblage by means of a nut 23, it'being apparent that in the operation of the trolley the cylinder 17 is free to. rotate upon the ball-bearings thus provided therefor within the heads 16 at the ends thereof. By the introduction of any, suitable lubricant Within the recess 20 it is apparent that-the bearings for the cylinder may be rendered smooth and easy running, as well as practically noiseless,
without any tendency to binding between the parts.
The upperextremities of each of the sets" of lower members 9 of the toggle-levers 10 are preferablyprovided with outwardly extending bearings 24, in which are supported transverse connecting-rods '25 between said members, while the lower extremities of the upper members 11 of each set thereof are similarly provided with bearings 26 mounted on the said connecting-rods 25, within and adj acentto the bearings 24,- it being noted that the lower members 9 of each set thereof are j oined or united by means of a horizontal brace 2'7, as well as diagonally disposed braces 28, secured thereto at 29 and also to the miller sides of the said members 9 at 30. The members 11 of each set thereof are similarly' connected near their upper ends by means of a horizontally disposed brace 31 and inclined or divergent braces 32 joined to the under side of the said brace 31 at 33 and to the inner sides of the said members 11 at 34. l
The base 3 hereinbefore referred to is provided inwardly of each of the bearings 6 thereon, with parallel plates 35, connected together in any suitable way, as by means bf pins 36, as shown, the said pins being located on. either side of and beyond the hereinbefore-mentio'ned spindles 7. In this way, it is apparent that the cylinder 17 will be held beneath the supply conductor 44 of the railway s1; stein in such manner as to always be in perfect electrical contact with said conductor, and in virtue of the special form of theends of the cylinder, it will be seen that whenever the same may. be carried from beneath the conductor over one line or section of railway to-be switched onto another line or section, the cylinder 1 7 will readily find itsway to operative position beneath the conductor of the second or branch line, practically with out re uiring any special manipulation thereof out e part of the operator. It will. be seen that the said cylinder 17 is of considerable 'length comparatively, thu's to.- insure the ;same' not leaving the under side of the conductor 44 during the travels oi' the car, and
