Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 10, 1907.
Application filed May 6. 1907. Serial No. 372.005-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOAH S. HARTER, of
l Waukegan, Lake county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Method of Makingv Coil-Springs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view illustrating one form of apparatus for carrying out my invention.
In the manufacture of open coil springs heretofore, it has been the practice `to press the coils together after the spring has been wound or coiled for the purpose of giving the spring a permanent set. A spring coiled in the ordinary manner will not resu me its original length after it has been compressed to its minimum length, but will be materially decreased in both pitch and length by such compression. set of the spring; and after this has once been effected, the vspring when subsequently compressed will, when released, resulne approximately the length and pitch effected by the first compression or set.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method whereby the springs are given a set at the time they are wound or coiled, or as they pass out from the coiling mechanism.
' The invention may be carried out in various ways and by thc'use of various forms of coiling mechanisms. In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one way of performing the same. i
In this drawing, the numerals 2 and 3 designate a pair of pcripherally grooved feed wheels, which may be driven in any desired manner. mountedin an adjustable bearing 4, having an adjustable setting screw 5 by means of which its position relative to the wheel 3 may be adjusted to regulate the feeding pressure of said wheels. From these wheels, the wire passes through any suitable guide 6', and is coiled on the arbor or mandrel 7. The wire, being tightlyv clamped between the Wheels 2 and 3, is forced through the guide 6 and around the arboror mandrel, being asadjacent to the mandrel.
This decrease constitutes the` pitch in excess of the desired .open coil springs, The upper Wheel 2 is preferablyv 8 designatesia suitable tool which is ad-V justably secured inasupport 9, and which has a beveled nose 10 adjacent to the arbor in position to guide the wire to the same. This tool governs the pitch of the spring; and by turning it in its support 9 to vary the angle of the guiding face o its nose 10, the pitch may be changed as desired. 11 designates a second tool, -also adjustably secured in the support 9, and having a nose portion 12 which is adjacent to the nose 10, and in position to bear against the outer side of the second turn or coil of Wire on the arbor and press said coil back closely against the first coil, thereby imparting a set to said second coil. In this manner, each coil is successively given a set after it is wound. By this method, I eliminate one operation and. also' the handling consequent thereto, it having been the praetice heretofore to coil the springs on one machine, and then transfer them to another i where the set is given.
, My invention is -applicable to the manu facture of all kinds ofA open-coil springs whether of the spiral type, or of the furniture spring type, and may be carried out with various forms of apparatus.
What I claim isz- 1. The method of forming helical springs,
which consists in forming Wire into a series of it is formed a itch, and then pressing each coil backwar y against the following coil to remove the excess pitch and give a permanent set thereto; substantially as described.
2. The herein described method of forming which consists in Winding or ceiling a piece of wire to form coils of a certain pitch, and pressing each coil backwardly against va later coil to remove excess itch and give a permanent set; substantial y as described.
In testimony'whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
coils, .imparting to each coil as NOAH S. HARTER.
