Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON W. BRODEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Big Lake,,in the county of Sherburne and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loading Mechanisms for Manure, Hay, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relatesto a novel mechanism for loading hay, straw, manure, or similar material, and resides principally in the provision of a grab which is peculiarly constructed so that it can be readily caused to release the material within its grasp after being elevated and moved over the vehicle being loaded.
The object of the invention is to provide a loading mechanism of this character which, while having a comparatively large capacity, is so designed as to be readily operated by a single man.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a lmowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the derrick and grab embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the grab; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the grab with the jaws in a closed position; and, Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the jaws in a closed position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
As shown in the drawings, the invention comprises a grab for engaging the material beirliog loaded, and a derrick for handling the gra Specifically describing the derrick, the same comprises an upright standard 1 carrying a laterally extending arm or boom 2 at its upper extremity, a brace 3 being employed for reinforcing the boom. The lower portion of the standard 1 is pivotally mounted upon a base 4. A series of diverging braces 5 extend upwardly from the corner portions of the base and carry a ring 6 receiving the standard 1 and serving to steady the same. A cross bar or lever 7 is applied to the standard 1 above the base 4 and constitutes a means for turning-the standard about a vertical axis to swing the boom 2. It will also be observed that a reel 8 is applied to the.
standard 1 for taking in and letting out the hoisting cable 9 which passes over a pulley or guide member 10 at the extremity of the boom 2. A second hoisting cable 11 is also utilized and extends over a second pulley or guide member 12 upon the boom. 1
The grab comprises in general two complemental sections 13 carrying teeth 14 upon their adjacent portions and designed. to be moved either toward or away from each other to grip or release the hay, or other material, as may be desired. Each of these complemental sections 13 consists of the two ends 15, a side 16 connecting the outer portions of the ends, and a bottom 17. The two complemental sections 13 of the grab have their two ends connected by bars 19 which have a pivotal connection therewith, the sections being designed to swing upon this pivotal connection to separate the teeth 14 or force the same together. Pivoted link members 20 connect the inner portions of the corresponding ends 15 and the two pair of link members are joined by the cross bar 21. In a similar manner, the outer portions of the corresponding ends 15 are connected by pivoted link members 22 and the two sets of said link members are joined by a second cross bar 23.
The hoisting cable 11 is applied directly to the secondcross bar 23 and constitutes a means for dumping the grab, since, by ex erting an upward pull upon the cross bar 23, the outer ends of the complemental sections are swung upwardly and the teeth 14 thereby caused to release the material heldwithin their grasp. The opposite hoisting cable 9 extends loosely around first cross bar 21 and has its extremity connected to the second cross bar 23. It will thus be apparent that any pull exerted upon the hoisting cable 9 exerts an upward pressure upon the first cross bar 21 and a downward ressure upon the second cross bar 23 thereliy tending to swing the outer ends of the complemental sections downwardly whereby the teeth 14.
are moved into operative position.
In the operation of the device, the jaws are separated by pulling upwardly upon the cable 11 and the grab then allowed to drop into the material being loaded. Upon elevating the grab through the medium of the hoisting cable 9 and the reel 8, the jaws are caused to grip the material, and after being elevated, the boom 2 can be swung into a proper position so as to suspend the grab oted link members ap .drop into the vehicle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:
1. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a grab comprising complemental jaws, a pair of link members having their inner ends pivotally connected while the outer ends are applied to the inner portions of the jaws, a second pair of link members having their inner ends pivotally connected while their outer ends are applied to the outer portions of the jaws, and hoisting cables cooperating with the two pairs of link members to elevate the grab and operate the jaws thereof.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a grab comprising complemental jaws, a bar joining the jaws and pivotally connected thereto, a pair of link members having their inner ends pivotally connected while their outer ends are applied to the inner portions of the jaws, a second pair of link members having their inner ends pivotally connected while their outer ends are applied to the outer portions of the jaws, and hoisting cables cooperating with the two pairs of link members to elevate the grab and operate the jaws thereof.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a grab comprising complemental jaws, cooperating teeth carried y the adjacent edges of the jaws, a bar connecting the jaws and pivoted thereto, pivp 'ed to the jaws, and
hoisting means cooperating with the link members to elevate the grab and to swing the complemental jaws to throw the teeth toward or away from each other.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a grab, comprising complemental jaws, pivoted link members applied to the innerd'portion of the jaws, a second set of pivote link members applied to the outer portion of the jaws, a hoisting cable having a slidable connection with the first mentioned set of linkmembers and a ositive connection with the second set of Erik members for holding the jaws in an operative position, and a cable cooperating with the second set of link members to release the jaws.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a grab, comprising complemental jaws, pivoted link members applied to the inner portion of the jaws at opposite ends of the grab, a cross bar connecting the link members, a second set of link members applied to the outer portion of the complemental jaws at each end of the grab, a second cross bar connecting the second mentioned link members, a hoisting cable loosely connected to the first cross bar for holding the jaws in a closed position, and a cable ap plied to the second cross bar for releasing the aws.
