APPLICATION FILED DBO.21,1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT B. McDANIEL, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PATRICK DOODY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed Decemher 21, 1906. Serial No. 348.893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. McDANIEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Stool and Folding Foot- Rest, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combination stool and folding foot rest, the object being to provide a convenient household article for use in blacking or polishing shoes.
The invention comprises a stool to which is hinged a folding foot rest of novel construction.
The invention also comprises means for securing the folding foot rest in its folded position, and means for firmly supporting the same when it is unfolded for use.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the drawing which forms a part of this s ecification, and its novelfeatures will be efined in the appended claims. a
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation, of a combined stool and foot rest, embodying the' invention, the foot rest being shown in its unfolded position ready for use, Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same, a portion of the top of the stool being broken away, Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the foot rest folded against the side of the stool and secured in this position, Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation partly in section on an enlarged scale showing a portion of the foot rest and its securing catch, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view also on an enlarged scale of a portion of the folding foot rest.
The reference numeral 1 designates a stool, preferably of the cylindrical form shown provided with a cushion 2 and having a drawer opening 3 at one side to receive a drawer 4 supported between parallel cleats 5 within the stool and adapted to contain blacking, brushes, polishing rags, etc.
The folding foot stool comprises two sections 6 and 7 connected at their meeting ends by pivotally secured links 8 secured to the opposite side edges of thesections 6 and 7. The section 6 is secured by means of a hinge 9 to one side of the stool and to the center of the outer end of said section 6 is secured an angle plate 10 adapted to be engaged by a spring catch 11 when the-section-6 is folded up against the stool. The catch v11 ispivotally secured between parallel brackets 12 projecting from the stool, and between said brackets is arranged a coil spring 13 one end of which is secured to the catch 11 while the other end is attached to the connecting plate 14 of the brackets 12. vided with a thumb piece 15. Numeral 16 designates a foot support secured to the section 7 of the foot rest and projecting from opposite sides of the section 7 are loops or bails 17, the ends of which are suitably secured to the section 7. A block 18 is interposed between the foot support 16 and the section 7 to elevate said support above the section 7.
A supporting brace 19 is pivotally secured to the under side of the outer end of the section 6, said brace being adapted to rest in inclined position as shown in Fig. 1 when the foot rest is in its unfolded position, and to fold against the outer side of the section 6 when the latter is engaged by the catch 11. The supporting brace 20 of bail form is pivotally secured to the under side of the front end of the section 7, said brace being bent forward at its lower or free end to provide feet 21. This brace 20 folds under the section 7 into the position shown in Fig. 3 when the parts are in their folded position.
The utility of the improvement constructed as thus described will be readily understood from the foregoing description in connection with the drawing. The user of the device seated upon the stool, places his foot on the support 16 when the foot rest is in its unfolded position and by passing a polishing rag under one of the bails 17 then over the shoe and under the opposite bail, the ends of the rag are gras ed by the hands and reciprocated 1n the we 1 known manner to polish the shoe. When the foot rest is not desired for use, the supporting brace 20 is swung outwardly and up over the section 7, the brace 19 is swung inwardly and folded against the section 6, the latter being folded against the stool 1, where the catch 11 engages with plate 10, holding the section 6 in the folded position, section 7 swinging in against the section 6, and the parts are retained in this folded position until the catch 11 is released. What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a stool, of a folding foot rest comprising two folded sections The catch 11 is proloosely connected together, one of said sections having a hinged connection with the stool, while the other section is provided with oppositely projecting loops or bails, a foot support, and folding braces secured res ectively one to each of the sections of the olding foot rest.
2. The combination with a stool, of a folding foot rest, comprising two loosely connected sections, one of said sections being hinged to the stool, oppositely disposed loops or bails projecting from opposite sides of the other section of the foot rest, pivotally secured braces for said section, and means for securing the sections in their folded position 15 comprising a sprin catch secured to the stoo and an angle p ate secured to the up er end of the foot rest section which is hinged to the stool.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 20 in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT B. MoDANIEL.
