Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that CHARLES E. BonnRIN GER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carterville, in the county of Villiamson and State of Illinois, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Safety Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway safety devices, and has for an object to provide means to be used in connection with railway cars and locomotives and the like for lessening the shocks, and prevention of damage, and loss of life due to collisions.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a car showing my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail of the forward end of a locomotive equipped with my device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the Fig. 4 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a similar view of a modified form. Fig. 7 shows another modified form of my invention.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 denotes a hollow cylinder adapted to contain glycerin or a like fluid, and 2 a plunger slidable therein. The plunger is preferably hollow as indicated at 3, and is in communication with the cylinder 1, through a small opening 4.
To prevent the plunger being withdrawn from the cylinder I provide in one side thereof a groove 5 running from the outer end, and terminating at a point within the inner end thereof. Projectmg from the cylinder 1, and into the groove 5 is a screw 6, whereby the lunger is held from casual displacement.

At 78 respectively, and onto of the cylinder 1, are indicated compresse air cylinders which are in communication with said cylinder 1, through passages 910, the passages 10 being of a greater diameter than the passage 9. At 11 and on the cylinders 7 and 8 respectively are indicated air inlet valves.
In Fig. 6 is shown a modified form of my invention, and in this form the compressed air cylinders are formed directly behind the hollowed portion 3 of the cylinder.
The 0 eration of my invention is as follows: With the cylinder 1 filled with fluid such as glycerin, or the like, and the plunger at the outer end thereof, and the compressed air cylinders supplied with air the device is ready for operation. At the meeting of two cars the plunger is driven into the cylinder 1, and'the glycerin is forced into the cylinders 7 and 8, through the passages 9 and 10 respectively, and the shock taken up thereby. By providing a hollow piston as shown, having communication with the piston cylinder, and by providing air cylinders communicating therewith, and a fluid therebetween, an effective cushion is had. After parting of the trains the air in the cylinders 7 and 8 respectively forces the glycerin back into the cylinder 1, which tends to push the plunger 2 to its normal position.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 7, I do not employ air cylinders as shown in Figs. 1 to 6, but connect to each cylinder at the rear thereof a pipe 12, adapted to contain air, supplied in any suitable manner, as from the air brake system, or from a tank containing air for this purpose. This pipe may be provided with suitable brackets for attachment to the car and serves also to support the cylinders.
What is claimed is:
1. A- safety device for railway cars, comprising a cylinder, a plurality of compressed air cylinders communicating therewith through different sized passages, and a plunger slidable in the first mentioned cylinder.
2. A safety device for railway cars comprising a cylinder, a plurality of compressed air cylinders communicating therewith, and a plunger slidable in said first mentioned cylinder.
3. A safety device for railway cars, comprising a cylinder, compressed air cylinders in communication therewith, a plunger slidable in said first mentioned cylinder, an air chamber in said plunger and opening into the cylinder. J
