Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
A li ati filed June 27, 1907. Serial No. 331,141.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. WEBSTER-, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New Lyme, county of Ashtabula, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inwhich i v Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a roof with my invention applied thereto; and Fi 2 a detail sectional view on the line 2--2 0 Fig. 1.
This invention has relation to means for securing felt or other sheet fabric roofing material to roofs and the object is to provide simple means which will avoid puncturing the fabric by driving nails through it and which at the same time will afford a smooth sharp drip edge for the roof, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings annexed by reference characters, a, designates the boards of the roof, 6 the fabric or sheet flexible roofing material fastened thereto and being watep' proofed in the usual manner. The margins of this fabric overlap upon sheet-metal plates 0 fastened to the upper surface of the roof-boards along the lower and end edges of the roof, these plates being nailed down securely to the roof. The outer edges of these plates or strips project beyond the boards of the roof and are provided with upturned flan 'es, these flanges runnin entirely around the ower edges and end edges of the roof.
The plates at the ends of the roof at their.
junction with the plate or plates running along the lower edge of the roof are overlapped by the latter plate or plates and the .upturned edges of the plates meet at the lower corners of the roof.
v The fabric is cut and laid upon the roof in such manner that its edges W'lll abut against composition, this plastic composition beingv applied all around the roof at the juncture of the fabric with the upturned flanges. In
this way the roofing fabric is securely fats-- tened in plat" Without driving nails through it which puncturing by nails injures the fabric, It will be observed further that by using the metallic flanged plates at the edges of the roof and extending them beyond the edges thereof, I provide not only for supporting the projecting edges of the fabric and for fastening them but also provide a smooth sharp drip edge.
Havingthus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a roof structure, metallic plates fastened down on the roof along its ends and along its lower edge, the outer edges of these plates projecting beyond the roof structure to provide a sharp dripping edge and provided with upturned flanges which meet at the corners of the roof, the plates at the ends of the roof having their ends projecting beyond the lower edge of the roof and the plates along the lower edge being overlapped upon these projecting ends, a roofin fabric laid upon the roof and overlapped upon said plates and their overlapping portions and extending to near said upturned flanges, and a plastic fastening composition applied at the juncture of the edges of the fabric and said rip-turned flanges.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses this 17th day of June i907.
