Application filed March 6, l'905.- Serial No. 248,698.
To all whom it malyconc ern:
Be it known that l, MARTIN M. SOHULLER', a citizen of the United States, residing at @hicage, iii the county of Cook and State of llli 'Fig. 1.
nois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Shingle-Fastening Devices; and i do hereby declare thdfollowing to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction' in a device for securing the ends of shin gles on buildings to revent Warping or loosening of same, the o' ject bein to rovide a chea and eflicient device of t is c aracter; and it consists in the features of construction Cparts hereinafter fully in the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the gable-roof of acottage having its giingles fastenedby means of my fastening evices. Fig. 2 is a detail fragmentary sec tion, on an enlarged scale, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail perspective .view, on an enlarged scale, illustrating the construction and manner of mounting of my fastening device. i
Shingle roofs become leaky byreason of the fact that the shingles Wa so that the corner portions of the free en s thereof extend upwardly and leave free spaces through which a high Wind easily drives the rain, and
these same free spaces also ofier means for excessively high Winds to,tear the shingles from the roof. 1 i
' My present device is designed to revent such leakage and tearing off of shing es and, furthermore, to eatly lengthen the life of the roof, and to t 's end consists of a strip A of relatively light sheet metal which is provided on one ed e at regular intervals with tonguesB, the ee ends of which are pro- .adapte vided on their side edges with V-shaped projections C, extending at right angles to the -%lanes of the tongues B. The said tongues extend at substantially right angles to the, i
plane of the strip, and when the latter is socured to the roof by means of nails D Eassmg through perforations E provided is erefor,
said tongues B will serve as a gage to determine the position of the next row of shingles, said strip being mounted upon the middle portion of the preceding row of shingles, and said nails D passing through the latter and into the planks supporting said shingles. As each shingle of the next row is secured the tongues B are forced over upon the same and the projections O driven into. the free end portion of the same. v
My said device is very simple, cheap, and efficient. I claim as, my invention- 1. A shingle-fastening device comprising a strip of-sheet metal secured to the roof underneath the free ends of each row of shingles and provided with projecting tongues bent over upon the free end portions of said shlnshingles, and V shaped pro ections on the side ed es of said tongues at their free ends d to be driven into the free end portions of said shingles to secure the same. In testimony whereof I have signed my name in presence of' two subscribing Witnesses.
MARTIN M. SOHULLER.
