'Told-ZZ whom 'it may concern: d
Be it known that I,`W1LLiAM H. STAATS,
, a citizenof'the United States, residing at Colonie, Albany county, State ofNew York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recoil-.Checks for Vehicles, of which the followin is a specification. f
My inventionreiates to recoil checks and consists of a recoil check in which the power to resist the upward movement of the carriage body is dueto 'a vacuum and in means air that the piston can only be raised by creating avacuum beneath 1t. The return of y the piston toits lowest position is facilitated by a springf coiled around the piston rodand bearing against the piston and the head a of the cyhnder, and inv order to .insure the eX- haust from -beneath the iston of any air which may flnd its way b thus equalizing the pressure on both sides of the piston as thelatter returns to its normal position, the istonis provided with a port A and a valve. .o ening upward, the valve' nected by a strap stem being suitab y guided iii a bracket y' and depressed by aspring d.
-The parts are so constructed that the lower' end of the cylinder maybe connected to the axle of the .vehicle andthe upper end to the body or an attachment thereof. `.As shown, there isa lug 7c on the'laottomcap of the cylinder, which lug has atransverse opening for the passage of a bolt fm, which extends through the ears of a clip n and .the -cl'ipmay be tightened upon the axle of the vehicle' by means of a nut p turning on threadslof the bolt which, therefore, serves both'ftoA tighten the clip and connect the cylindertotheaXle.`
One means of connecting the piston with the carriage consists in providing the piston rod above the cylinder with acap g, with whicliis formed a loop'b adapted to-be con. s or otherwlse to a loop on` or to any art o the body of the vehicle. When t e device is arranged upon the vel hicle the flexible strap-connection s permits a elow the piston,
certain amount of movement downward of the vehicle without aflectin the'device, but when, owing to any jolt the od'y of the vehi cle tends to rise suddenly the strap will be tightened and' the piston will be carried upward in the cylinder until the pressure u on the piston resulting from the vacuum be ow overcomes the force of the momentum and arrests't'he body, but with a slow and almostI imperceptible. resistance, thereby avoiding the jolts and jerks, the discomfort and the strain ofthe vparts which result when'no recoil check is employed. It will be seen that in this case'the resistance to the movement is not due to compression of theair or to the use of valves (the valve 'h serving merely to prevent an accumulation of airbelow the piston), and therefore after the device isonce arranged and put in operation there is nothing in it which willget out of order and render Ait inoperative. y
To avoid the shocks or noise which would result from the sudden bringing of the cap g against the'hea'd of the cylinder l interpose av washer or cushion g which may be a disk of yso rubber, felt,` or other suitable material. This also serves as a packing around the piston to prevent the inlet of dust to the cylinder.
The spring coiled about the piston rod tends to insure the depression of the piston with a quick movement as soon asthe stress upon the strap isrelaXed, but .this need no't alwaysh be employed'as the air pressure Adue to the vacuum below the piston will tend to carry the latter downward. If any air should find its way below the piston, however, the air can escape through the check valve h and the spring insures the full descent of the piston. Without limiting myself to the precise c onstruction and arrangement of parts shown, I claim: l
1. The combination in a recoil check, of a closed cylinder, a piston, a piston rod extending through the head of the cylinder and provided with a cap, a spring between the piston and the cylinder head, means for 'connecting the cylinder and the cap to a vehicle, and a washer interposed between said cap and cylinder head.
Y 2.y The combination in a recoil check, of a cylinder closed at the ends, a piston and piston rod, the piston having a port and check valve opening upward, a spring coiled around the piston rod and bearing upon the pieten,
" Y rated lug at the bottom of the cylinder, a
and means-for connecting the piston rod with of the pistonvrod provided with a, loop, and a, 10 the body of the vehicle and the cylinder with washer at the top of the cylinder, for the purthe axle. 2 pose set forth. v
3. TheV combination in a; recoil check, of a In'tes'timonywhereof I aLHX my signature 5' closed cylinder, piston,v piston rod, a, perfoin presence of two Witnesses.
