THE TEXAS IMPLEMENT AND MACHINE COMPANY,*A CORPORATION.
PLANTEB.
Be it known is particularly applicable to the class of single l row riding planters or riding middle bursters, which are provided with means forbursting out old cotton stalks andrebedding. In the operation of riding planters of .this character considerable difficulty is experienced in keeping the bursters or sweeps on the ridge when they are cutting the cotton stalks, and in order to overcome machine to shift-laterally during this cutting o eration various devices have been provided, such as rigid colters and kniferudders, cross-head clevis adjustments, etc.,
be fully described in .but so far as we are aware none of `these devices have been found sufliciently eective or entirely-satisfactory when the planter is cutting through heavy stalks. l
therefore contemplates the which can be deflected |orshifted laterally so as to quickly checkany tendency of the burster or .sweep to m'ove olf the ridge.
This is accomplished, as will be hereinafterl seen, by swiveling the colter in a supporting frame or bracket and providing means forv operating the swivel-connection; all as will the following specification.
In the accompanying drawings which form a art hereoft-Figure 1 is a longitudinal si e elevation showing the application. of our invention to that style of riding planter which forms the sub'ect-matter of the prior patent granted to D. Schofield Decemer 20th, 1904,- NQ. enlarged detail perspective' view of our improved steering device. Fig. 3- is a de- Specioation of Letters latent. Appiimioii tied. mmh 8, 1907. serial No. 361,371.

tail showing ja modification hereinafter referred to.-.g
`e numerals.of'reference'indicatefllike partsin all thefigures kof the drawings.
In ca a supporting frame or rrying out ourfinvention-we provide bracket 1, which mayV be of any approved form of construction,
but in the present instance, and as shown, comprises an attaching plate 2 and integral bearing arms .3 3, the atter being spaced apart and provided with vertical openings .which are adapted to receive and form the bearings for a" `vertical shaft or standard,
, The vertical'shaft or'standard 4 carries at its lower end a revolving colter 5, and at its upper-*end is provided with a cross-bar 6, which is shaped at its ends to formstirrups 7, said cross-bar constituting the means by which the shaft or standard is turned in its bearings. The cross-bar is preferably connecteddetachably to the shaft or standard,
and for this purpose is provided centrally vwitha sleevel 8 to receive` the shaft' or standard, and ,with a binding-screw 9v which is threaded through the sleeve and impinges against said shaft or standard. Interposed between the ipper bearing 3 of the supporting bracket an 'a collar .10 ad'- 'ustably mounted on the shaft or .standard elow. said bearing lis a compression spring 11, which is adapted to exert a yielding pressure on the standard and therefore permit the colter to ride over a stone or yother obstiiuction and prevent any injury to said coter.H ..1
` Instead of ein" loyinra colter, as shown in the awings, we may, in
what. is commonly known the deviceto this style lof `rud- .In this instance the shaft or 'standard 12 .is
, adapted to fitthe-bearings 3 of the supportracket 1, so that the knife-rudder and .itsstandardjinay vbe used in connection with such bracket.
' In Fi 1 of the app cation of our invention, and in that instance the supporting bracket 1 which car- `the ydrawings we have shown ries the steering blade or colter is attached to the standard of the forward or main shovel of the planter and so that the colter or blade will follow and operate in the rear of' the same. It is obvious, however, that the device may be attached to any other part of the planter, but when it is adapted to be operated by the feet of the driver it should belocated With respect tothe seat that the feet of the driver may conveniently rest within the stirrups.
Thedevice o erates similar to the ordinary rigid colter or knife-rudder, with the exception that by means of the swivel connection the colter or knife-rudder in the resent instance may b e shifted or deiiecte after the manner of a ships rudder and thereby quickly bring the burster or shovel or cutter back to the ridge so as to keep it in a straight -linetherewith.
As herein shown and described. the shifting of the clter'orknife-rudder is'effected by pressure of the drivers feet upon the ends of the cross-bar, but'it is apparentthat other means for operating the swiveled standard may be provided, such for instance as `the ordinary hand-lever and suitable connections.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters-Patent, is :fv y 1. In a riding planter, the combination with a sup ort, of a vertical standard vertically mo'vable and rotatable in the support, a rudder-'blade at the lower' 'end of th standard, stops 4for limiting thevertical movement 'a steering device therefor comprlslng a supporting bracket, a standard rotatable there- 1n, a rudder-blade atl the lower end of said standard, an adjustable collaron: the standard, a compression spring. interposed between the co lar and turning the standard.
4. -The combination, in a riding planter, of a steering device therefor comprising a supporting bracket, a standard rotatable there- 1n, a rudder-blade at the' lower end of said' standard, a collar adjustable on the standard, a compression spring interposed between the co lar and bracket, and a cross-bar secured to the upper end of the standard and provided with stirrups at its ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony'whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
