To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osHUA W. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avis, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transplanters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the laccompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to improvements in transplanters; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of a link or a connecting-rod to be sometimes used.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A represents the casing of my improved transplanter, having at its top portion a frame, A', provided with a cross-piece, B, cut away at its middle portion to form a hand-hold, a, as shown in Fig. 1. At each end of this crosspiece, and pivoted in suitable bearings thereon,are the arms bb', which are hinged together at their inner ends, as shown, and provided with elongated slots b2, which allow an easy backward and forward movement of said arms when the machine is operated. The crosspiece B is also provided with a spring, c, which abuts against the under side of one or both of the arms, whereby said arms are thrown upward when released. The spring may be made of any well-known construction.

Pivoted to the bottom of the casing A, and on each side thereof, are the shovels or planters D D', provided at their sides with extensions d d', having hinged thereto the lower ends of the levers ff', the upper ends of these levers being hinged to the ends of the arms b b.

The letters O C denote the coverers or hoes, hinged to the sides of the casing 'in any suitable manner, and having arms c c', to which are pivoted the lower ends of the arms l g, the upper ends of these arms being pivoted to the ends of a handle, M, said handle being hinged to the sides of the casing, as shown in Fig. 1. This handle is provided with springs h h', secured on each side ofthe casing.

On the inside of the casing Isecure, in any l suitable manner, a pipe or feeder, L, having at its top a flaring mouth-piece, Z. This mouthpiece is removable to the other side of the casing, and can be fed from that side by asecond person, thereby relieving the operator from feeding the machine, if so desired.

I wish it to be understood that in planting in soft soil I can dispense with the handle M and arms g g', and attach a link or connecting-rod, O, to the ends of the arms c c and to the extensions d d of the shovels. I further desire it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise construction shown in my invention, as I may deviate from the same without departing from the true spirit and scope thereof. Y

The operation of my machine is as follows: The arms b b and hand-hold a are grasped by the right hand of the operator. Said arms are then pressed downward, which causes the shovels or planters D Dl to spread apart, as shown in Fig. 2. The handle Mis then brought into action by means of the left hand or knee of the operator, to close the hoes or coverers I, C C and press the soil toward the plant in the pipe. Said handle is then released, which opens the coverers and leaves the plant depositedin the ground. The armsbbretractto their original position by means of a spring, c, which closes the planters. v

Having described my invention, what I claim isl. In a transplanter, the combination, with the casing having at its top portion a crosspiece having pivoted in suitable bearings arms b b', pivoted together at their inner ends and provided with elongated slots, of a spring, c, connected to said cross-piece and bearing under said arm or arms, as shown and described.

4. The combination, with atransplanter, of the plunger-rod having a gage-ring and setscrew, as and for the purposes set forth.
