Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed March 23. 1906. Serial No. 307,590,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAnnnTr II. IIUISING, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Seals, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to seals, and has for its object the construction of a seal that will effectively prevent the separation of the seal from the loop, the ends of which are to be closed or united by the seal, without such disfigurement and mutilation of the seal that will render the act detectable.
In practicing my invention, I construct a seal in the form of a double headed compressible soft metal shank, one of said heads having a rim formation extending but partially about the shank to form a clear passage for the fastening loop or member, the head opposite the head having the rim formation being smaller than the latter head, thereby being adapted to be compressed between portions of the rim formation, so that said portions of the rim formation guard against the lateral displacement of the loop.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a plan view of the seal of my invention before it is applied to a loop, the loop and the structure to be guarded by the loop being indicated, the free ends of the loop being shown in such association with the seal that the seal may be applied to the loop effectively to connect its free ends, Fig. 2 is a view in the direction of arrow 2 (Fig. l) the portion of the loop wound about the stem of the seal being indicated in section. Fig. 3 is a view in the direction of arrow 3 (Fig. l) of the seal and a portion of the loep. Fig. 4f is a view generally similar to Fig. l, the smaller head of the seal being removed. F 5 is a view generally similar to Fig. l with the seal applied to the loop, the seal showing the private mark formed by the implement in the hands of the one supposed to be the authorized user. Eig. 6 is a sectional view of Fig. 5.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
l l l l n l The drawing shows the preferred embodiment of the invention, seal formed of soft metal, preferably pure having a shank a provided with two The head l) is desirably of smaller the head c so that a portion of the latter head may inclose the head l) when the seal is applied to the loop, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 6, and, in order that the larger head may thus be disposed in part about the smaller head, the larger head desirably has a rim formation (l, this rim formation being preferably divided into segments, the space between which is desirg ably equal to the diameter of the smaller head l), so that when said heads are mashed toward each other, the smaller head will be disposed betweenthe rim parts (l. The portions Z of the head c thus cover the meeting line of the heads b e so that the loop e may not be withdrawn from the seal without mutilating the rim formation. The shank a is desirably made of small diameter as compared with the diameters of the heads so that the free ends of the loo p e may be wound thercabout, the shank by being made of small diameter being severable under su'flicient strain placed upon the loop in the e'lfort to remove the seal. This mutilation of the shank will cause mutilation of the external parts of the seal to such an extent that the external appearance of the seal cannot be restored.
By making the rim formation (l in segmental sections a clear straight passage is afforded for the loop between the heads of the seal, this passage being closed, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, when the seal has been applied to the loop. By the provision of this clear straight passage, the string or wire, or other material, that is to constitute the fastening loop, need not encounter the rim formation as the seal is being mashed, whereby the string, or other material, is notI sharply bent, as it would be if the said rim were not made in segmental sections with a clear passage afforded between the same.
IVhile the heads are preferably circular and the shank is preferably cylindrical, I do not wish to be limited to these shapes.
It will be seen that the rim formation l projects vfrom the head c in the same direction in which the stem a, projects from said head.
IIaving lead, heads b c. diameter than thus described 'my invention, I
which comprises al claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent A seal in the form of a double headed soft metal shank, one of said heads having a rim formation extending toward the other head and but partially about the shank to afford clear passage for the fastening loop or.mem ber7 the head opposite the head having the rim formation being smaller than the latter head to permit the location of the smaller l' head between portions of the rim formation.
In witness whereof7 I hereunto subscribe my name this 7th4 day .of February A. D.,
