note-r1353.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, C'ARL hlARTLNI and Hmmmn Hi'mmm, citizens of the German Empire, residing at Hanover, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Storage and Transference of Inflammable' Liquidsq and we do hereby declareithe following to a full, clear, and
, exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an apparatus for the storage and transference ofinflammable liquids such as benzene for example in which a gas which is non-oxidizing or which acts as a non-oxidizing gas (such as carbonic acid gas) -'s used for transference of the liiqgiid and for'filling the'space aboveit in the t s.
from the storage tank when the inflammable liquid is being transferred thereinto from the transporting vessel, is directly or indirectly drawn or passed by a compressor-or the like intoa reservoir tank or accumulator, thence it can againbe'supplied as required to the storage tank, through suitable ipes so that the same gas can be repeate 1y used for transference of the liquid.
The object of the invention is chiefl to efiecta saving b recovering the gas use for transference of t e liquid and using it again. It is therefore only necessaryto introduce fresh gas to make up for the comparatively small quantities which may escape owing to leaks in the apparatus and such like losses. It is consequentlypossible according to this invention to use ev'enin large instal ations.
Owing to the circulation of the gas and its being used repeatedly the loss of a certain quantity of h uid which would be carried away by orotherwise escape with the as during the transference of the inflamma le liquid is avoided. Further owing to the gas contained in the storage tank being drawn out simultaneously with the filling of the li uidinto the tank, this filling is considerab accelerated.
he construction of an apparatus embodying our invention is illustrated'in the accompa ili ylilng drawing.
ough the cover b of the storage tanker pass the gas piped and the pipe 0 which extends close to the bottom of the tank and serving for filling and discharging the inflam- Spec ification of Letters Patent. Application filed larch 22. 1907. Serial No. 868.982.

mable li uid. The pipe cis provided at its outer en with a stop valve e to which can be connected a hose pipe g'serving for transmitting the liquid from the transport vessel f mto the storage tank a. The as pipe 11 is connected to the suction valve of a compressor i or, like apparatus the discharge valve 70 of which is connected b a pipe m to a reservoir or accumulator n. T e tank n containing the gas under pressure is connected by means of a pipe. 1 provided with a reducmg valve 0 and a stop valve p, to the pipe (1 below the suction valve h a' three-way cock .9 being arranged at the junction. By means of thisthree-way cock 8, communication can be established either between the pipe (1 and the compressor 41, the pipe r being shut off, or between the pipe 1' and the pipe d,
, the compressor 'i bein shut off. According to this invention the gas-issuing The 0 eration of t e apparatus is as follows en it is desired to transfer the liquid contained in the transport vessel f into the storage tank a, the three-way cock 8 is turned into suchposition as shown in the drawing as to establish communication between the pipe 11 and the suction valve h of the compressor '5, the ipe 1' being shut off; While the liquid is flowing through the pipes i; and c, the gas contained s ace above the iquid in the tank (1 (having een previously introduced in a suitable manner), is drawn off through the ipe d and forced into the tank 'n through t e pipe m. As soon as the storage tank a is filled the three-way cock is turned in such manner that the communication between the compressor '8 and the pipe (1 is closed, and the latter is connected to the pipe 1' connected to the tank n. Further, the ose pipe 9 is dis-connected from the stop valve e of the li uid pipe. The liquid contained in. thetan a can then be discharged through the cook or valve e after having opened the valve p of the pipe 1', so that the gas contained under pressure in the reservoir 11 after'passing through the reducing valve 0 can find its way intov the tank a thr'ough'the three-way cock 8 and the pipe d.
After the storage tank a has been emptied it can again be filled in the manner described, the gas contained in the storage tank bein drawn off by the com ressor '2' and forces into the reservoir n whi e inflammable liquid is flowing or bein forcedintothe tank from a transport vesse Thus the same, quantit of gas is always used and circulated accor ing to this process during the transference or gas owing to leakage in the non-oxidizin storage of inflammable liquids. Any loss of 1pipes or otherwise .may be easily made up or instance by connecting to the pipe 1' a tank. i filled with a carbonic aci bottle. i
It will be understood that the gas drawn from the storage tank may be passed by .the compressor, pump or like device into the reservoir under considerable pressure so as to maintain in the reservoir the full pressure required for the subsequent transference of the liquid from the storage tank.
The details of the apparatus may be, varied in other ways without de arting from the s irit of the invention and t e apparatus may 0 viously be adapted to various circumstances and requirements.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described,
, the combinationiof a storage receptacle for inflammable liquids located below the level of the ground, a liquid-conveying. pipe leading from the bottom thereof, a gas ipe leading from the top thereof, and at ee-way cock in said pi e .above the surface of the ground, the sai gas ipe branching from the three-Way cock, one ranch leading to a suction pump and the other to a gas-pressure bottle and a gas-storage rece tacle, which latter is also connected direct y to the discharge end of the pump, substantially as described. 3-5
2. In a device of the character described,
pressure gas, for example a.
mess
the combination of a storage receptacle, a liquid-conveying pi e leading from the lower part of the receptac e, a gas pipe leading from the upper part of the receptacle, a gas-stora e tank, a pump having its inlet connected wlth the pipe and its outletwith the said tank, a discharge pipe leading from the tank to the gas pipe at a point between the pump and the rece tacle, and adjustable means for connecting t e gas pipe either with the pump inlet or with the disc arge pipe of the tank, 3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a storage receptacle, a
liquid-conveying pipe leading from the lower part of the receptac e, a gas pipe leading from the upper part of the receptacle, a gas-storage tank, a pump having its inlet connected with the gas pipe-and its outlet with the said tank, a discharge pipe leading from the tank' our signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
