' T 0 all whom it may concern:
. provide a sash frame which, while of exceedingly light weight, will yet be exceed-- ingly strong and rigid.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction whereby binding strips employed to assist in holding the glass in'position in the sash may be more firmly secured in positionupon the sash.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the tol lowing claims. In the accpmpanying drawings, wherein is illustrated one of the various possible embodiments of my invention :-Figure 1 is a crosssectional view taken through the bottom rail of a sash, showing the same in a partly completed state. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the rail before the glass is positioned therein. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the glass seated in the rail and clamped therein.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein tom rail, which is preferably formed integral, as shown. This member, in its upper portion, is provided with an integral shoulder as at 2, against which the glass 3 is. seated, the glass resting .upon a horizontal portion 4 at the base of the shoulder.
As shown in Fig. 1 "of the drawings, the
'vided in an angle binding strip .8.
metal adjacent portion 4 is first dished, as at 5, and a portion thereof is extended upward to form a longitudinally extending lip 6 adapted when bent downwardly to enter the dished portion ,5, as clearly shown in Fi 2. It will be noted that the metal is thus bent and lapped upon itself to form-three thicknesses of metal. The lapped portions of member 1 are then apertured and threaded to receive screws, one of which is shown at 7 said screws entering through openings 16mne flange of this-binding strlip seats the-lapped portion, and the other ange extends upwardly in parallel relation with the face of shoulder 2, the glass being firmly clamped between this flange and said shoulder.
The lapped portion of member 1 not only provides a reinforcing means for the rail, but also provides a firm bedding for the screws employed to hold the angle binding strip in position.
It will accordingly be seen that I have provided a construct-ion well adapted to achieve the several ends and objects sought to be obtainedin an exceedingly simple yet ellicient manner, and while I have shown my invention applied to the-bottom rail of a metallic sash, it will be obvious that the same, if desired, may be. employed in the side or top rails and still retain its mherent advantages.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many a parently-- wvidely' diflerent embodiments of t he invention could be made withoutdeparting-from the scopethereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above-description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is 1% 1. A sash rail formed by a hollow metallic member having an integral shoulder against which the glass seats, a portion of the metal comprising J said member being bent and lahped; an angle binding strip seated upon I and-hold the same against-said shoulder, and
said lapped portion, and screws extendlng means extending through said member and -.through said binding strip and tapped into I said reinforce for holding the former in fixedsash rail formed by a hollow metallic member heving an integral shoulder against said lapped'portiont 1 position upon the letter. 15
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
