LEWIS B. JOY, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK. ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND BENONI S. BROWN, OF THE SAME PLACE.
Letters PatentNo. 87,050, dated Fcbr'ua/ry 16, 1869.
IMPROVED A ROOPINCrCOMPbSITION.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS B. JOY, of the city of Buflalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Plastic Composition for Covering Roofs, and other purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof.
My improved compound consists of the following ingredients Pulverized clay and clean, dry sand, equal parts. Melt one barrel of pitch, coal-tar, or other resinous substance, and add thereto three gallons of boiled linseed-oil. Tothese add the clay and sand in equal parts, stirring until intimately mixed, and until the proper degree of thickness or plasticity is acquired, which is such as will enable it to be moulded, or spread evenly over the surface for which it is intended, while kept in a liquid state by heat.
Much difficulty has been experienced in so compounding and tempering the material of plastic roofs as to be hard, without being brittle, and cracking under extremes of temperature; but the eifect of the linseedoil, in combination with the pitch and earthy ingredients, remedies this to a great extent, by rendering the mass hard and tough, at the same time giving it a firm, leathery consistence, which renders the roofs hard enough to be firm under the influence of .extremely hot weather, and without danger of cracking from extreme cold. It also makes it resist the effects of moisture better than without it, and eii'ectually prevents the volatilization of any of the properties of the pitch,- which is a common cause of the deterioration of plastic roofs. The oil also facilitates the combination of earthy ingredients with the bituminous one.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- g The composition for plastic roofs, composed of the ingredients and in the proportions substantially as herein set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEWIS B. JOY.
