The spaced rollers receive an eccentric disk 26 therebetwcen, the said disk being mounted on double crank shaft 27.. The shatt27 is mounted in suitable bearings at the end of the stand at which the shaft 22 is located and the double crank 28 of the shaft 27 is conn'ectedby a pitman 2 9,of T-form, with the pair of levers hereinbeforedescribed. in other words, it'will be seen that the shaft 27 actuates the bc'aring blocks through the levers-13 and members 15. Said shaft 27. also actuates -the frames 18 throughthe rods 20 and pituran rod 241. The inner ends of the links 30 and 30- are pivbtally connected, however, with the central portions of the cross bars 18 of the frames 18." It 'willbe apparent from the foregoing'that when the rods 20 have longitudinal movement imparted thereto; pivotaldnovementwill be imparted to the links 30 and 351. 1 Movement of the T615520 one direction will time so actuate the'links 30 and 30 and -31 and 31 as to force the frames laterally and toward leiFi s being therefore responsible for the actuationof each other; or in an opposite direction, away fr0 m other. An inclined supply chute 35 is located at oneend of the stand 1 and supplies ,r e cjeptacle'stp" e'llabeled, to the gripping and labelingmechanisln The'lower end of the chute 35terminat'es at a zpoin'ta jacnt' to the normal positions of thejgrippers 19and as'a neceptacle passes from the chute 35, the" nich 20 'W' compression chamber T46 from the inner end of the chute 35. This movement of the grippers causes them to carry the can .or receptacle-engaged thereby, across the upper open end ofthe magazine 3, and the uppermost label of -the stack in the magazine is applied to the can in this movement thereof, said label having pi'cviously'been provided with paste or adhrsive material, by pasting mechanism to be hereinafter described. The can or receptacle 36 engaged by the grippers 19, and being carried across the open end of the magazine 3 thereby, is revolved in its movement in order to facilitate the application of-the label to be pasted thereon. The revolution of the receptacle as above mentioned, is effected by retation of the grippers l9 and such rotation is caused by flexible connections such as tapes or wires 37, which are attached at their ends to the'il'ame-work of the machine and which have intermediate portions passing about grooved Wheels 38 mounted on the outer end portions of the gripper shafts l7. 1n the movement'of the grippers longitudinally of the frames 18, the flexible connections 37 rotate the wheels 38, which are fixed on shafts 17 and necessarily impart similar movement to the grippers 19.
Retarding mechanism is employed to hold the receptacle in the chute 35, as one of said receptacles is being carried across the magazine. 3 in applying a label thereto. This retarding mechanism consists of a plurality of retarding fingers 39, which are vertically --inovable at that side of the magazine 3 adjacent to tho shaft 22. Normally, the retarding fingers 39 are heldin such a position that they project upwardly from the bottom of the chute 35 to thereby prevent the lower most can in said chute from moving from the position assumed thereby just previous to such can being gripped by the grippers 19. However, as the grippers 19 are returning to the positions initial to gripping the can to be next carried across the magazine and labeled, a bar 40 having a hook 41, is actuated and imparts movement to a bell-crank 42, which crank is connected with the lower portions of the retarding fingers 39, such movement of the bell-crank pulling downwardly upon the fingers 39 to force said fingers out of the way of the can which is gripped by the grippers 19 which start to carry said receptacle to the labeling mechanism. A spring 43 is connectcd with the fingers "39-and normally holds said fingers projected upwardly sufficiently to engage the receptacles fed from the chute 35. The hook 41 of the bar 40 is engaged by a transverse bar 44 which connects the-ilevem lh said the retarding fingers 39 as hereinbefore'set forth.

The roller 77 occupies the space at the inner side of the box, being snbstituted for such side removed, and constituting a closure for the paste, save as hereinbeforejdescribcd.
The paster 61 descends in order toapply the paste to the uppermost label in the magazine 3 and as the pasting surface of the strips 63 is brought into contact with the label, the whole upper side of the label, or a portion thereof, may be supplied with paste, its-desired. In view of the construction ofthe invention, however, it is necessary to prevent the label in the magazine 3 from being thrown upwardly by the paster 61 on ascent-of the latter, due to adherence of the label and poster.
The means provided for this purpose is comprised in the ejector or label remover which cooperates with the pastor or paste-applying device 61 and which consists of the plate 66, before described and a plurality of thin blades 97, which project downwardly from thelow'er side of said plate 66. Asbeiore described, the strips 63 are slightly spaced from one another and the spaces. thus provided permit the blades 97 of. the label ejector or remover ,66 projectingthrough the pastor, to'engage the label and prcssupon the same suh'iciently to prei vent adherence oilthe label and pastor. The blades 97 preferably fitin slots in the plate 66 or they may be I so otherwise s'ec ured thereon and as said blades are very thin, there is no likelihood of same adhering to the label, when the label ej cctor or remover is preventing ad- ,herence of the pastor and label. The rods 65 which studs 101 projecting upwardly from the cross bar 64. One end of each lever 100 has pivotal connection withthe upper end of one rod 65, and the outer end of each lever is adapted to be engaged bya' lateral arm 102 projecting from short vertical standards 103 carried by the upper frame -work supported by the uprights 2. In actiop, as the paster 61 descends to the label in the mag'liziiie 3, the blades 97 project from the .under or pasting surface of said paster. However, the
pastor moves down irlto contact with the upper surface oi the label and applies the paste thereto, this movement being admitted of by the spring mounting of the blades 97 operated by thespring actuated rods 65. ,When the pasting. sru'fac of the pastor 61 is in contact with the label, the lower edges of the blades 97 are in a horizontal line with the pasting surface. 7 As soon as the 'paster 61 begins to ascend, however, the blades 97 immediately move down so as to project from the under side or pasting surface of he paster 61 and thus prevent adherence of the label with the pastor, or in other words, remove thg label from the pasting surface of the paste-applyingdevi cla 61 aforesaid. The continued upwardmovemcnt oi the pastor will disengage the blades as new is:
97 from the label as the label remover orlejectop carried by the pastor. As the pastor approachesits' limit of upward movement, the levers 100 connected with therods 65, are engaged by the outer ends thereof by the arms 102 and the rods 65 are moved upwardly so as to carry the blades 97 into such positions that they do not project from the pasting surface of the. paster 61-. Immcdia telythat the levels 100 have accomplished this faction, the shaft 89 is actuated so as to operate the horizontally slidable bars 87 to carry the paste-applying roller 76 across the pasting surface of the pastor 61 to supply paste thereto. The blades 97 are withdrawn just in time toavoid interference with the roller 76 as it moves into contact with the pasting surfaceof the strips 63 of the paster 61. As soon as the roller 7 6 has applied the paste to the pastor 61, the said roller moves laterally from the point beneath the poster so as to admit of the next downward descent of the latter, which immediately takes place; 1 Y
A detailed explanation of the operation of the invention is unnecessary from the foregoing, but a general description of suchoperation'is herein given. As the machine is being operated either by motor or manually, the cansor receptacles to be labeled, are fed from the chute 35 governed only by the retarding fingers 39. Thegrippers 19' engage the receptacles as soon as they leave the chute 35 and carry the receptacle across the open end of the magazine 3 in contact with the label uppermosttherein. This label has been previously supplied with paste upon its upper side, by descent of the pastor 61 thereon, and the grippers 19 being revolved in traveling over the pasted label, the latter is .readily wrapped thereabout. The label having been applied to the receptacle, the grippers 19 force the ceptacle into the compression chamber'64, whereupon it is delivered to the outrchute, 47 by the delivery belt 45, the compression plateabove the belt 45.1irmly eifecting adherence of the label with the receptacle.
