Description
UN'rnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
CHARLES W. SOULE, .OF ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED SHOE-SUPPORTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 87 ,009, dated February 16, i869.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SoULE, of Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful machine for the purpose of presenting the shoe to the needle of a sewingmachine for sewing the uppers to single-soled shoes, and for presenting the shoe to a nailingmachine, by the same means, for the purpose of nailing, called a Shoe-Supporter; and I do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a section of longitudinal elevation; Fig. 2, a transverse view; Fig. 3, transverse view ot' face-plate c and standard a, disconnected, Fig. 4, face-plate c and standard u', front elevation; Fig. 5, a transverse view of face-plate c and standard a, connected; Fig. 6, standard and angle; Fig. 7, standard supporting a shoe, with the last withdrawn, at an angle obtained by swinging and turning on its centers, b b and f, constructed as follows, to Wit:
The standard a., attached to the brace d, which is hun g upon the supporter H, thereby obtaining a swinging motion, the said supporter H turning upon its center f, enabling the upper end of the standard a to maintain a common center at whatever angle desired..
Theface-plate cis constructed of a round, dat, or, convex plate, attached to a circular wheel, as shown by c, Fig. 3, and a corresponding circular slot in the end of standard a, as shown in Fig. 4, the two forming a circular joint, or compensating movement, which enables the face-plate c, by any pressure vertically, to maintain a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 7, the shoe resting thereon, and presseri'oot of a machine bearing upon the same, the
whole being made of iron, or other solid metal, and turning upon the disk or table G upon the pivot f.
The operation of said machine is as follows, viz: The shoe-supporter, being attached or used in conjunction with any sewing-machine for the purpose of sewing the soles to the uppers, or with any machine for nailing the soles to the uppers ot" boots and shoes, being in an upright position, place the shoe, with the last withdrawn, upon the faceplate c, Fig. 7, the presser-foot of a machine, i, bearing downward upon the same, the shoe being carried by means of a feeding process, the downward pressure keeping the face-plate c in a horizontal position, while the standard c, by its turning and swinging motion, carries the plate c to any curve or angle within the shoe.
What I claim as my invention, and desire-A to secure by Letters Patent, is A '1. The applying and attaching the vertical standard a to the brace d, for the purpose of resting the shoe, while it is being sewed or nailed, as described.
2. The swinging of the brace d on either or both of its bearings or axles b-b, combined with the turning of the support vll-I on the pivot f, forming a common center for the end of the standard a, both by the axles horizontally or by the pivot f below.
3. The attaching and combining ot' the faceplate cto the circumference of the wheel when inserted in a corresponding circular slot in the end of the oscillating standard a, forming a circular joint, or compensating movement, for the standard and hinge, at any required angle, constructed as and for the purposesdescribed.
