To all whom "it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to I which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved metal wheel which may be cheaply constructed and which, at the same time. will be strong and durable.
To the above ends the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters -indicate like parts throughout-the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows the improved wheel in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section taken approximately on the line 00 00' of Fig. 1, some parts being left in full. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line a x of Fig. 2, the parts being shown on a larger scale than in Figs. 1 and 2, and some parts being broken away; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line a x of Fig. 3. 4
The rim of the wheel is made of a single piece of flat sheet metal, the edges of which are folded inward against the inner face of the rim and are then brought together and extended radially inward in the central plane of the wheel rim, The strip of metal thus bent forms an annular rim 1 that is approximately T- shaped in cross section, that is, has a fiat or laterally extended running face, and an internal centrally located annular rib, which rib is perforated to afford seats for the outer ends of the spokes 2 of the wheel. These spokes 2, at their outer ends, are passed through the said seats in the rib of the wheel rim 1 and are either riveted, upset or bent in such manner that they can not be withdrawn from the said seats.
The hub of the wheel is made up of a bearing sleeve 3, a spacing sleeve 4 and two pairs of spoke clamping plates 5-6. The bearing sleeve 3 fits within the spacing sleeve 4 and projects beyond the ends of the same and has its projecting ends turned outward to form retaining flanges 7. The cooperating clamping plates 5 and 6 are mounted on the ends of the bearing sleeve 3 and are clamped between the ends of the spacing sleeve 4 and the out-turned end flanges 7 of said bearing sleeve 3. - The spokes 2, it will be noted, are connected in pairs, or, in other words, a single wire or rod bent into approximately V shape affords two spokes. The bowed inner portions of these spoke rods are passed between the cooperating clamping plates 5-6 and are hooked over hooked lugs 8 that are pressed laterally from the clamping plates 5. The clamping plates 6 are provided with lip extensions 9 that are bent over the retaining plates 6, thus interlocking or securing together the outer edges of the cooperating plates 5 and 6. The said lips 9 also serve to properly space apart the legs or prongs of the spoke forming rods.
The wheel described may be constructed at small cost and, furthermore, is strong and durable. It is adapted to be used for a great many different purposes but is especially designed for use as a wheel for baby carriages and small carts and wagons. If desired, a rubber tire may be applied to the rim of the wheel.
What I claim is:
In a wheel, the combination with a suitable rim and approximately Vshaped spoke forming rods attached to said rim at their outer ends, of a hub made up of the outer spacing sleeve 4, the inner bearing sleeve 3 having flanged ends 7, and the clamping plates 56 arranged in pairs and clampedon the ends of said sleeve 3 between the flanged ends 7 thereof and the abutting ends of said spacing sleeve, said clamping plates 5 having laterally pressed hooks 8 that engage the bowed inner portions of said spoke 8 to hold the inner portions of said rods, and provided with lip extensions 9 bent over the said clamping plates 5 between the spokes, substan tially as described.
