To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Tuoiuas BERRY Locxtnv, of Maberry Clinton street, Goulburn, in the State of New South Wales and Commonwealth of Australia, teacher of carpentry, have invented anew and useful Improved Auxiliary Fuel-Box for Stoves, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention of improved auxiliary fuel box for stoves and the like has been specially devised in order to allow the use of wood fuel in lengths longer than the ordinary firebox will allow. And this invention is applicable to washing boiler steainboiler and other furnaces.

According to this invention an improved auxiliary fuel box for stoves and the like consists of a box open at one end and having a removable lid and is generally oblong and rectangular but should conform to the shape of the firebox of a stove and is supported in front of and with its floor or bottom level with said firebox by a bracket from a U-shaped frame the return of which rests upon the hearth or floor or projecting foot plate of stoves whose fronts are not in the one vertical plane and the ends whereof take under the hollow nosing of the stove plate. In some cases the box may be constructed in two parts telescoping one within the other. But in order to illustrate the carrying into practical effect of this invention the same will now be described with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this complete specification in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary stove with improved auxiliary fuel box attached thereto and Fig. 2 a cross section on plane 22 in Fig. l but showing a telescopic auxiliary fuel box. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view showing the hinged flap for closing the inner end of the auxiliary fuel box.

The box 3 preferably of sheet iron has a strengthening band of iron 4 riveted around its inner edge at the open end 5 and a removable lid 01' cover 6 and a riding piece 7 on each side adapted to rest upon the top bar of the side brackets having horizontal member 8 and diagonal 9 extending outwardly on either side from the U-shaped frame. The return of this U-frame rests upon the floor while the ends of legs 10 take under the hollow nose ll of the stove plate retaining the whole in position. On the side of said box 3 is a stop 12 adapted to strike against the diagonal bar 9 of the bracket 8 so as to limit outward sliding of the box 3 and its withdrawal from the fire box. As shown in Fig. 2 the fuel box 3 may be made in two parts telescoping one in the other the outer part 3 being supported as described by the member 9 and in this case the box 3 has in each side a stop pin 15 which by means of the slot 16 allows the inner part 13 of the box to slide in and out. A casing 17 protects this pin and slot so that draft may not pass through when the box is extended.

In use the front bars or grate are let down or removed and the legs 10 of the frame carrying the brackets S and 9 are placed under the nose ll of the stove-plate and said frame pushed in against the stove. The box 3 carrying the riding pieces 7 is placed upon the members 8 with the riding pieces 7 taking thereon. The lid is removed as required and lengthy pieces of wood fuel placed in the box 3 and these pushed along into the firebox of the stove from time to time the lid being returned to place. When it is necessary the box 3 is drawn out to increase the available space but normally is pushed in tight against the stove.

If desired a hinged [lap 18 internally of the box may be arranged to fall against the inner strengthening band of iron 4 or to be drawn up clear to the top of the box and controlled by chain or handle 19 through hole in top and having a large ring or link 20 at its end to fasten on to handle if it were found necessary to fasten it while the box was filled with large log. This hinged flap will prevent heat escaping into the fuel box when the fuel has burned short and so reducing liability to burning of person or scorching of clothes.

Having now fully described and ascertained my said invention and the manner in which it is to be performed I declare that what I claim is;-

1. Au attachment for stoves and the like. comprising an auxiliary iuel box and a U shaped support. the ends of which are adapted to engage the top plate of the stove, and a bracket carried by said support and having a slide for the auxiliary fuel box.

2. Au at t'aclunent: for stoves and the like. comprising an auxiliary fuel box having an open end adapted to 'communicate with the fire box of the stove, supporting means adapted to be applied to the exterior of the stove, and a bracket applied to said means and having a horizontal slide for the auxiliary fuel box.

2', An attachment for stoves and the like. comprising an auxiliary fuel box having an open end adapted to communicate with the fire box of the stove, means for support ing said auxiliary fuel box comprising a horizontal slide, a pin and slot connection between said fuel box and slide, and a casing 17 within sa d fuel box for protecting,- the slot openings thereof.
