DUPLICATING-PAD AND HOLDER.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application nu December 8L1906. Serial No. 350,272-
To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that l, PERRY A. i\[cCAsi nv. u'citizcn of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicating-Pads and Holders; and I do declare the following to he :1 full, clear, and exact description or the invention. rclcrcnic being had. to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. whi h form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to pods or books of hill slips intended to be made in duplicate by the carhon o 1' similar duplicating process, the invention havingrcfcrence particularly to holders for the pads, and holdcrs I for carbon sheets and stop cards to he used with the. podsnnd their holders, which may be required in the duplicating process.
Objects of the invention urcto provide it holdpro! (use for bill pads and it simple form of holder for :1 carbon sheet or a. slop card so that the carbon sln-cl' or sl p curd may be used witlrvnriou; ylcs of pads: on olijor'l being to provide it holder adapted to receive various kind of pads, so that the permanent covers with which hi ll pods are usually provided, may he dispcnsmll wilh, thus cheapening the cost of produclion of the hill slips.
A still further object is to provid :1 mrlion shecl n nd holder to he used indefinitely until worn out, thus cf- 5 Referring to the drawings Figure l is a pi-r -pm-livc view showing the inveullon suhslmitmlly Us (rilifill'llf' Q ed with a. cover extending over th hill pawl: l perspective View with the cover opened; l ig spective View of gt modified form of pud holder will: Which the carbon sheet holder is connccliml; Fig. 4, ii. transverse sectional view taken through the paid in Fig. 2; Fig. 5. a longitudinal sectimuil vi w of Fig. 2: Fig. (i. o. fragmentary.perspective view showing 1r modified construction of the pad l10ldcr;'Fig. 7, 1i pcrspwiivc View of pad of modified form arranged in a holder; Fig.
8, LL perspective view of another type of pod uniuigod on the modified holder; and Fig. 9, an end elevation showing the upper end of the pod holder illusl'intcd in Figs. 1, 4 and 5.
Similar reference characters in thesevoizil figures oi the drawings designate corresponding, elements or features of construction.
The present invention is associated with a credit system which requires that with ouch stile of merchandise the incrcluint shall make out a. hill of goods and simulluncously a dupliculc thereof, one being given to the purchaser and the other retuincd by the merchant to conslitute his The bill slips are pcriorzilcd and hound in pads or hooks from which the slips :u'c l'crnovcd when required for use. Various types of pads ho w l cen employed, three of the favorite types being illusiriiled herein either one of which may be, used in connection with the present invention, as will further :ippcur.
The improved pad holder, in-its preferred form as shown in Figs. 1, 2, l, 5 and 9, comprises a rectangular hack 'nle (I. preferably composed of suitnhle moul, and having; u head-piece b provided with an integral lingcr'piccc c and (L clump-bur (I, the latter formed inlcgrrnl with lhc lingcr-picco. for clamping a pad and ii rznlmn-shect holder on the back plate a, the headpiece 1) living connected lo the plate u by hinge e and provirlcrl with u spring-f for forcing the clump-bar tightly upon the pzid. this construction being designed to acconunodzuc pads of (llllQllETlh thickness.
The holder may or may not he provided with 3 cover .lor the pad, the cover being desirable when the pads he carried in the pockets of solicitors to the houses of lhe customers, or to he us d as plates between slips when backs of hill slips are c-.u'honizcd, hut when the puds and curhori sheets are used exclusively inthc slori-s, the covers nuiy be dispensed with. When n.
uillic cover is desired. the back plate a is provided at iis lower cud. or end opposite to the headpiece, with nlohwo g by which ii i'or.ii-picec k is connected to the lunch plane. und a hinge 1' cmniccts u. covcrj with the fooepic 'c Also the hock plate a is provided with in: its lower cod r cer the hinge g to assist in bolding 2 pad on ihe h; ii-ate. The hinge g incidentally guidv o the hottou'i of the hr-icl-L plate a, heluff zu'runucd tho requisite distance from the head piece I.- \o receive the shuuhird me of pad. The cover has clips mad or formed at opposite ends thereof to hold a sheet of paper or card 1'1 which inay he uscd for such records -is may he desired. by turning over portions of. the phi! es.
A modiliczil ion of the holder is shown in Figs. 3, Tend 8 in which 21 ouch philc a is employed [hut has a vertithe plate a may obviously he variously formed to as The clips 1;, Z m are formed sist in holding the pad of bill slips. in Fig. 6, a back plate 11 having a clip is turned over at an end thereof to hold the back board of the pad.
In Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5, a simple form of pad shown in connection with the improved pad holder. 0 designating the uppermost bill slip of, the pad, all of the slips being perforated at 7;, near the head of the pad. slips are all alike (except as to proprietary advertising matter,) and may be torn separately from the binding stubs at the head of the pad. The carbon sheet is to be inserted under each original bill slip in order to make a duplicate of the bill on an adjacent slip, but there are no carbon sheets bound in the pad. such expense being avoided in the present invention.
A carbon sheet holder (1 is provided which is rectangular in plan and extends from the head piece I; to the foot end of the back plate a. so as to bear against the parts ofthe hinge 9, under the clip k. The carbon sheet 7' is somewhat shorter than the holder q, and is secured preferably by stitching to one of the longer sides of the holder q With its ends somewhat remote from the ends of the holder, and the carbon sheet is folded up over the top of the pad so as to lie upon the uppermost slip o as in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5. without covering the upper and lower ends of the slip, thus leaving the lower end of the slip free to be accessible to lift it and draw itv from under the carbon sheet, so that it may be placed upon the carbon sheet before making the entries on the slips, the carbon sheet being suilicicntly large so as to cover the portions of the slip that areintendod iobc written upon. By this arrangement it will be unnecessary to finger the carbon sheet in making the entrles. and ai'tcr the entries are made the slips may be readily torn away from the stubs from under the carbon sheet.
In the more simple form of pad holder the foot end of the back plate a is turned up and forms a foot piece 8, which serves as a guide for the carbon sheet holder. in some cases the holder is provided with an outer covering 15, and the foot end of the holder is provided with a plain cover it connected by a flexible hinging strip i to the covering 6.
In Fig. 7, a different style of pad is shown of which each pair of leaves is formed of a single sheet of paper folded over to form two leaves. one leaf 11' being bound at the head of the bill and perforated at a. while the other leaf 'u/ is not attached to the head of the pad. but is attached to the leaf u: at the loot end :t' at a line of perforations, and the folded ends are accessible so that the two slips may be torn away from under the carbon sheet r. The head end of the slip 11; isaccessible so that it maybe lifted and drawn from ttnderthe carbon sheet. so as to be placed thereon in order to make the desired entries on the bill slips.
In Fig. 8. still another style of pad is illustrated, each two sheetsy and 2 being bound in the pad at their head ends and perforated at z. the two slips or leaves being formed of a single sheet folded over and perforated at 2. In this pad each original bill slip i has carbon pulls back so that a stop card or plate is required to be placed underthe duplicate slip y. so as to prevent transferring onto the other slips in the pad. For the at commodation of this pad a stop card I" is attached to the holdcr q. in lieu of thc carbt n sheet 1'. the stop card being of the same dimensions in plan as the carbon The sheet above described, so that the ends at 2 oi the snps may be accessible to lift them in order to pla e them upon the stop card which in use will lie under the duplicate slip y.
It will be seen from the foregoing that while the tastes or desires of the merchant may be gratified in the matterof styleof pad, the cost oithe paosrnay be materially reduced by leaving oil the permanent cover and if desired also the back board heretofore supplied, and but a few of the improved universal pad holders may be needed. each holder capable of accommodating either style of pad. and as will be seen the carbon sheets are designed so as to be adapted for use with either style of pad. Each carbon sheet may be used with different pads until entirely worn out, and need not be thrown away it still serviceable when the slips of a pad have all been used.
The manner of using the holders and transfer sheets will be fully understood from the foregoing description without further detail.
