To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. Porrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taylorvillc, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jump- Seats for Buggies; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improved jump seat for buggies, adapted for use in connection with an ordinary buggy or other vehicle seat to enable a third person to be seated, and which when not in use may be folded down under the main seat and disposed out of the way, and it consistsin the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a jump seat embodying my invention,

' made of metal, has its upper end bent outwardly as at 3 to form a bracket for the support of the seat 4 and has its lower end formed at its center with an arm 5. It is provided with a slot 5 and forms a hinge member. A hinge member 6 is formed by a plate which is secured to the under side of the buggy seat I and projects slightly beyond the front side thereof at its center and is provided with a slot 6 for the reception of the rear portion of the arm 5 and a pintle 6 which passes through the slot 5; Said plate is further provided with a depending flange 6 near its frcnt end which bears against the front side of the cross-bar under the buggy seat, hence the standard 2 is pivotally connected to the hinge member 6 and is also slidably conncctcd thereto. The standard may be raised to a vertical position at the center and front edge of the buggy seat 1 in order to support the jump seat t and to raise the same sul'licicntly above the buggy seat 1 to be above and out of the way of the knees of the persons seated on such buggy seat. When thus raised, the standard 2 bears against the front side of the buggy seat and also against the flange 6 which forms a wear-plate, and the pintle 6 is in the upper end of the slot 5* so that the said standard is supported and locked in a vertical position. It may be also strengthened in this position by means of a hook 8 which is pivotally mounted on the buggy seat by a bolt or other suitable device 9 which extends through a slot 10 with which said hook is provided so that said hook may be moved longitudinally.

In order to turn the jump scat downwardly, it must first be raised to engage the pintle (3 with the lower end of the slot 5 when the jump seat may then turn pivotally with reference to the member or plate (5. When the jump seat has been turned downwardly, its standard extends below the buggy seat 1 and the seat 4 is under said buggy scat out of the way. The said standard is secured in such position by means of a latch 11,

one end of which is pivoted, as at 12, and the other end of which is free to disengage a keeper 13.

The jump seat is provided with a slot Il/l engaged by a bolt 15 which extends through the bracket 3 of the standard 2, so that the seat may be adjusted longitudinally of the bracket, and hence moved either forwardly or backwardly, as may be desired to enable it to clear the bottom of the buggy when the jump seat is dis.- poscd under the seat I. Said buggy seat may be made of metal, wood, or other suitable material, and I do not limit myself in this particular.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the ininor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-

1. In combination with a vehicle seat, a jump seat having a standard hinged to the vehicle seat and adapted to be raised and lowered, said standard having a broadened surface to bear against the front of the vehicle seat when raised. and a hook pivotally mounted on the vehicle seat and having a slot through which its pivot extends, said hook being thus adapted for longitudinal movement and also adapted to engage the standard of the jump seat to secure the same in an upright position.

2. A vehicle seat having :1 jump seat provided with a standard hinged to the vehicle seat and adapted to be raised and lowered, said vehicle seat being further pro vided with a hook to engage said standard and support the same in a raised position, and a hitch carried by the vehicle seat to engage said standard and secure the same when in a lowered position.

In combination with a vehicle seat, a jump seat having a hinge member secured to the vehicle seat and provided with a slot and a pintle, and a standard having an arm at its lower end provided with a slot engaging the pintle of the hinge member, said standard having shoulders on opposite sides of said arm at its upper end to bear on said hinge member, substantially as described.
