Description

51am @met Weeezeew 1 CHARLES JONES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA',
Letters Patent No. 86,930, dated February 16, 1869; antedatezl Fabrica/ry l, 1869.
IMPRovED RAILROAD-Silvina'.
To all 'whom it may cm1-tern: A
Be it known that I, CHARLESl W. JONES, of the city of Philadelphia, vin the cbunty of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and nseiil- Improvement in Railroad Safety-Switches, and I do -hereby declare that the ihllowing is a true and exact vdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which is shown a plan view of my invention.
The object of my invention is to provide av railroad safety-switch, by means of which I apply my two springpcints 0r guides to the present switch in use, they being duplicates to cover the main-trackrails,when the switch is set for the side track. Thus a train coming from the double track will be carried over safely on to the main-switch rail. 1
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I fasten spring-points, C and D, to sliding bar E,
'on which the switch-railsvare ordinarily fastened, this slide being worked by lever L to shift the switchrals A and B from main track to side track, and back again.
Spring-points G D are also fastened to sliding brace F, brace F being fastened to spring S P, which lies parallel with and is fastened to switch-rail B, always holding points C Din the same position as they move with the switch, and' will guide the train from single track to main or side track, as the switch maybe set; and agaimif the trainv comes from the doubie,
track,'wh'en the switch is set for the siding, the flange. of the wheels will always act as a Wedge, and move the spring-points to their proper place, and be carried over safely, they springing back, and taking their formerposition. y
Having thus described my invention,
YVhat I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is.-
A safety-switch, composed of the ordinary switch,y
