To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED PoUKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Device for Releasing Animals from Stalls, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a device for releasing animals from stalls and more particularly to a device for unhitching animals in the stalls, the object being to provide a device whereby the animals can be easily and quickly released from outside of a barn in case of fire.

Another object of my invention is to provide very simple and effective means for operating the shaft carrying the locking pins so that it can be operated very quickly.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification:- Figure 1 is a section through a portion of a side wall of a barn showing my improved unhitching device in elevation. Fig. 2 is a section through a portion of a side wall of a barn showing my improved unhitching device in plan with the halter chains secured in place. Fig. Sis a section taken on lines 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the shaft supporting brackets with the roller removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking members. Fig. 6 is a side view of a modified form of shafts supporting brackets showing the shaft in section. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the shaft guide-plate. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the end portion of the shaft and coupling members.

Referring to the drawing A indicates the side wall of a barn or shed in which my improved unhitching device is adapted to be secured, it of course being understood that the device can be used for hitching horses in sheds as well as in stalls.

A frame B is secured to the outside of the barn or shed provided with openings in its side in alinement with an opening A formed in the barn or shed through which extends the reduced threaded end C of a square shaft 0 which is slidably mounted in the notch D of a guide plate D secured to a block on the inside of the barn or shed. A hand wheel E provided with a threaded bore is mounted on the threaded end (1 of the shaft C, between the sides of the frame adapted to be turned so as to work the shaft O back and forth in the notch guide plate which also prevents the shaft from turning having upwardly projecting notched ends F in which the stud-pins G of the grooved roller G are mounted the stud-pins G at the other end of the roller being mounted in openings formed in the face. A hollow shaft H is mounted on the grooved roller, adapted to be connected to the end of the shaft C by an inverted U-shaped coupling clip I, the depending threaded ends of which extend through openings formed in the shafts adjacent their ends and are connected together by an apertured clamping plate I which is securely clamped against the under side of the shafts by nuts which securely couple the shafts together. A shaft J is adapted to be connected to the end of the shaft H by similar coupling members, when it is desired to use the device in other stalls, and it can be readily seen that shaft-sections can be coupled on as desired, so as to use the device in as many stalls as desired.

Mounted on the shaft H to each side of the plate F are arms K provided with outwardly projecting pins K at one end, and a split-sleeve K provided with apcrtured ears at the other end adapted to be clamped 1 over the shaft by a bolt. Apertured ears F project out from the plates F adjacent the upper ends through which the pins K of the arms K carried by the shaft are adapted to pass and secure rings L carried by the halter-chains L between the same.

In the modification shown in Fig. 6, I have shown a bracket M provided with an outwardly extending curved plate for supporting the shaft.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that the halters can be readily released by turning the hand-wheel which will draw out the pins from the ears, and allow the animals to go free.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with brackets provided with apertured ears and rollers, of a shaft mounted on said rollers carrying locking pins working in said apertured cars, a notched guide plate, a square shaft mounted in said notched plate provided with a threaded end, and a handwheel mounted on said threaded end.

2. The combination with brackets adapted to be secured to the walls of a stall, and provided with grooved rollers and apertured ears, of a shaft mounted on said rollers, arms secured on said shafts provided with pins workingthrough said cars, a guide plate secured to the walls of the barn, a square shaft mounted in said guide-plate connested to said shaft, and provided with a threaded end and a hand wheel mounted on said threaded end.

3. The combination with brackets provided with apertured ears, of a shaft slidably mounted in said brackets provided with locking members working in said apertured cars, a guide plate, a shaft mounted in said guide-plate provided with a threaded end, a frame arranged over said shaft and a hand wheel mounted on said shaft in said frame.

4. The combination with brackets provided with apertured ears, of a shaft mounted in said brackets provided with locking pins working in said ears, a notched guideplate, a square shaft mounted in said notchedguide plate and connected to said shaft at one end, and provided with a threaded portion at the other end, and a handavheel working on said threaded portion, for the purpose de scribed.

5. The combination with brackets carrying rollers and adapted to be secured to the heads of stalls and provided with apertured ears, of a shaft mounted on said rollers carrying locking pins working in said apertured ears of the brackets, a notched guide plate secured to the inside of the wall of a barn, in alinement with an opening formed therein, a square shaft provided with a threaded end mounted in said guide-plate extending out through said opening, a frame provided with apertured sides secured on the outside of the barn over said end, handwheels mounted on said shaft between the side of the frame and means for connecting the other end of the shaft to the shaft carrying the locking members, for the purpose described.

6. The combination with brackets providedwith apertured ears, and grooved rollers and adapted to be secured to the heads of stalls, of a shaft mounted on said rollers having arms clamped thereon provided with locking pins working through said apertured earsfi a notched guide plate secured to the side of a barn in alinement with an opening formed therein, a frame provided with openings in its side secured to the outside of the barn in alinement with said openings. a square shaft provided With a threaded end mounted in said guide-platte extending out through the openings in the barn and frame, means for connecting said shaft to the first mentioned shaft and a l1andwheel mounted on the threaded end of: the shaft in said frame, for the purpose described.
