COLLAPSIBLE CRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed January 30, 1907. Serial No. 354,883.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PERRY E. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Cherokee and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Collapsible Crate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible crates and its object is to provide a simple structure of this character all the parts of which are permanently connected and which can be quickly'set up or folded.
A still further object is to provide a crate with reinforcing strips which are formed integral with the hinges connecting the parts of the crate, s'aid straps alsohaving corner of the crate showing one of the locking ears; Fig. 4 is a view showing the crate collapsed; Fig. 5 is a side.
elevation showing the collapsed crate folded; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the end strips of the crate.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, A is the bottom panel of the crate the same being made up of parallel slats 1 connected at their ends by metallic cross straps 2 each of which has a pair of integral eyes 3 at its ends and a pair of eyes 4 extending from the outer edge of the strap near each erid; A front panel B'is disposed along one edge of the bottom panel and is made up of slats 5 connected at their ends by straps (i and each of these straps has an integral eye 7 extending between the eyes 3 of one of the pairs and held thereto by a pintle 8. The other end of each strap 6 has a tongue 9 extending therefrom and provided with an aperture 10. A back panel f is arranged along the opposite side of the bottom panel A and is made up of slats 11 connected at their ends by metallic straps l2.
= openings ill in tongues 20.
l lach of these straps is provided at its ends with eyes 13 and 14 respectively, the eyes 13 being-disposed between the adjoining eyes 3 of strap 2 and connected thereto by means of a pintle l5. Thetop panel 1) of the crate may be made of one or more pieces and as ing metallic straps 17 secured to the ends thereof, each strap being provided with a pair of eyes 18 and one end the adjoining eyes 14. A tongue 20 extends from each strap 17 and has an opening 21 adapted to receive one of the tongues 9 hereinbefore referred to.
Each pair of eyes 4 carries a pintle 22 on which is mounted an eye 23 formed at one end of an L-shaped strap 24. These straps are arenged in pairs and are suitably fastened to the ends of the panels E of the crate. The straps are so shaped-that the end panels can be folded on to the bottom of the panel A or can be swung into an upright position on the top face of said panel, as shown in Fig. 1, in which event said end panels will rest directly upon the bottom panel A by reason of the peculiar contour of the straps 24. Each strapdias hooks 25 formed at the outer edges thereof. These hooks overlap the side edges of the panels E and are for the purpose hereinafter set forth,
It is to be understood that when the crate herein described is collapsed the end panels E rest upon the bottom face of panel A while thefront panel B rests upon the opposite face of said panel A and is overlapped by the back panel C. It will be noted that the hinge of this back panel is raised somewhat from the panel A so that the panel C can rest upon the panel D when folded. The top panel is folded backward on the panel C and the entire crate can then be fastened together by a cord or in any other desired manner. One or more trays 26 can also be included in the bundle formed by the collapsed crate. When it is desired to set up the crate the'panels B, G and l) are unfolded after which the end panels E'are swung into upright positions upon the upper face of the bot om panel A. The front and the end, front and back panels together. The tray 26 can be placed within the crate and can be supported on a series of baskets or other receptacles therein, such as indicated by dotted lines at 27 in Fig. 2. After the crate has been filled the top panel D is swung downward so as to cause the tongues 9 to project through the Said tongues can then be locked by inserting a pin 28 or any other suitable liold- D and )ressin" the anels E inward the arts can be quickly unlocked so as to enable the crate to be folded in the manner hereinbefore described. Importance is attached to the fact that the hinges are integral with 1 straps which extend throughout the widths of the vaof which is mounted on a pintle 19 extending through strips, although it is to be understood that if preferred rious panels thereby dispensing with the use of cross such cross strips may be used in addition to the straps.
By constructing the crate in the manner described the number of parts necessary for the proper assembling and securing of the panels is reduced to the minimum.
What is claimed is: A
1. A crate comprising a bottom panel, a top panel, and side panels, one side panel and the bottom panel being; in terposed between the top panel and the other side panel, straps hine'edly connected at their ends and secured to the respective panels, the straps of the outer side panel having integral tongues. and the straps of the top panel having apertures to receive said tongues, angular straps hinged to one longitudinal edge of each strap of the bottom panel and movable at right angles to said straps, hooks integral with the angular-straws and disposed to engage the straps ot' the side panels, and end panels secured to the angular straps.
2. A (rate comprising a bottom panel, straps extending transversely thereof and secured thereto. said straps havin: integral laterally extending ears, angular straps pivoted to said earswmd adapted to assume positions upon the bottom panel and adapted to swing onto and to be limited in their movement by the bottom panel. one portion of each of said straps extending perpendicularly to the bottom panel upon reaching the limit of its movement, end panels secured to the angular straps, side panels, straps thereon, and hooks integral with the angular straps and disposed to engage the straps of the side panels to hold said angular straps in perpendicular position.
'3. In a crate a hinge comprising a plurality of straps hingedly connected at their ends and disposed to be [astened to the bottom, side. and top panels respectively of a crate. ears extending: laterally from one edge of the strap of the bottom panel; angular straps hingeclly connected to the ears. and hooks integral with said angular straps and disposed to engage the straps of the side panels.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, 1 have hereto atlixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PERRY E. P-OYI).
