For causing the rotation oi one of the indicators when the car'is going in one direction, and for positively pre# venting the rotation of the other indicator, l provide the following means, shown in Fig. 2. but more cl( arly disclosed in Figs. 7 ond S. The ratchet wheels 22 and pawls 23 beneath the ttvo gears 17 are so constructed that motion is imparted to one of the gears 17 when the shaft 19 is rotated in one. direction, and motion is imparted to the other gear wheel 17 when the shaft. 19 rotates in the opposite direction. ln order to positively prevent the gear wheel 1.7 from being carried along with the ratchet wheel 22 and shaft 18 when the latter .rotates in a direction which would normally cause the teeth of the ratchet wheel to freely slip beneath the pawl 23. I provide means for holding the shaft l5 from rotating in that direction. This means consists in s ratchet, wheel 24, rigidly secured to the sluit '15, adjacent a loose collar 25 on said shaft. This would prevent the indicator' from opemting, even though the car were still moving and the indicator, therefore, would not indicate the 10 stations until after they were passed. ln my improved indicator and operating mechanism therefor, above described, it is evident that as the small wheels areentirely independent oi' the hmkes or ot' the traction motor, they serve as a true indicator oi the progress` o the car and properly indicate the signals.
A As the auxiliary axle 43 extends entirely across the track, `and is provided with two sinnll wheels and the frame for supporting said axle is free to move a suflicient distance for these small Wheels to be kept upon the track at all times, it is evident that there is no possibility of the small wheels getting oli the track, as would be the case were there only one Wheel and that supported in alinement with one cf the main car wheels. In the latter case, the small Wheels would almost inevimbly j ump the track as the ca r rounded a. sharp curve. ln order to permit of the backing oi a. car for a short distance along the route without in any Way interfering with the signal, or causing the Aoperation of the signal at what was the rear end of the car, I provide s. Special form oi clutch, shown in Figs. 1, 9 and 10. The gear Wheels 20 upon the opposite ends of the shalt 19 n re' loosely mounted thereon andare held in place b'y collars 52. One side of each bevel gear 2O is provided with a single tooth 53, adapted to engage with -the single tooth 54 on a. collar- 55, secured to the shaft i9 in any suitable manner. As the. shaft 19 is rotated the tooth 54 ol the collar 55 engages with the tooth 53 ofthe bevel ucar wheel 20 and causes the rotation of the latter, but should the car reverse its direction a short distance 40 at. u point intermediate its route, the tooth 54 would he moved away from the tooth 53 of the bevel gear and no reverse motion of the indicator would be effected. The indicator would remain stationary while the car was backed up to permit the passage oi' s tea-rn, to hook onto a car behind, or for any other reason, and when the car started ahead again the indicator would remain sta.- tionary until thc car reached the exact point at which it had begun to reverse, and then the indicator would again operate in exactly thessme manner as though the cnr had Anot been reversed. The advantage of this construction is very readily apparent, as were no such 'means provided, it is evident that a portion of the route inbeingtrsversed the second time would cause the operation of the indicator and cause it to indicate stri- .55 tions in advance of their arrival.
Having thus'described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 1. 5. ln combination with a car, an indicator located 'at euch end thereof, and means whereby the indicator at one end of the car will be operated when 'the car is golug in one direction, and sold indicator held stationary and .the indicator in the opposite end of the car operated when the cnr is going in the reverse direction, sold means including, a shaft. a ratchet wheel, u collnr loosely mounted ou the shaft, u pnwl mounted on the collar und in engagement with the ratchet wheel, und a weighted lever suspended from thecollar.
6. In combination with a car, two indicators located operating both of said indicators, means whereby one ot the indicators will be held stationary and the other indicator operated when the car is going ln one direction and whereby the tlrst mentioned indicator will be operated und the second mentioned indicator held stationary when the cnr is :ein: in the reverse direction, and means whereby the direction of the car may be reversed a. short distance without eiiecting the operation of either indicator.
8. In combination with a fear, an indicator located therein, and means adapted to engage with the car rail to operate said indicator, said menus including an auxiliary axle, two car wheels mounted thereon and adapted to travel on the two mils, und a pivoted frame adapted to support said axle whereby it muy follow the car truck irrespective of the curvature or unevenncss of the latter.
