Application filed January 29, 1915;
To all whom it may concern JOHN PAFLITZKO, subjects of the Emperorof Austria-Hungary, residing at Garfield, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Station Indicators for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in station indicators for cars. 1
. The primary object of this invention is to provide a viewable means within a railway car whereby the passengers are kept advised as to. the name of the next, station to. be reached upon the route.
A further object is to provide a shiftable station indicating curtain within a car adapted to be successively shifted automatically at each station along the ronte by a special form of tripdevice having an automatic means for returning the same to its normal inoperative position. i
A still further object of the invention is to 7 provide in connection with a station indioator for cars, an actuating meansv for the curtain operated by a stationary trip. positioned adjacent the track upon which the car; is traveling and including a vertically movable claw member depressibleby the trip and arranged for automatic return to its normal position by means of spring members.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con? sists; in the novel combination and arrange ment of parts hereinafter more fullyde scribed, illustrated" the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming. a part of this application and in which like-designating characters; refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device detached from the car and shown partial vertical section, with the elements in their normal IQQSl? tion and about to be actuated by the trip mechanism. Refer-ring more in detail to the drawings it will be noted that a casing 10 is provided which is adapted to be secured at any convenient point within a railway car, such casing being adapted to contain the indicating mechanism which includes an endless curtain 11 upon which the names of the successive stations along the route are inscribed, while such names are viewable through a trans parent window 12 in one side of the casing. The said curtain 11 is mounted upon opposite sprocket wheels. 13 carried by a shaft 14 which is journaled in opposite brackets 15 and 16 mounted within the casing. It will thus be evident that any desired name which is found upon the curtain may be brought into registry with the window 12 by turning the shaft l t in any manner such as manually by means of the end wheel 17 towhich access may be had by means of the hinged door 18 of thesaid casing.
A base. 19 is provided in the casing 10 upon which are mounted spaced posts. 20 having vertical longitudinal slots 21 therethrough and in which slots a mounted rod 22 is slidably positioned. A hook or claw 23 is j ou rnaled upon the rod 22 between two collars 2 1 which are fixed to the said rod,
while the free end of the rod has its hook 25 normally engaging the uppermost posi-v tioned rod tooth 26 of the wheel 27 fixed to the said curtain shaft 14, and as best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings. Expansion springs 28 are positioned between the base; 19 and the rod22, the said springs having their outer ends attached to collars 29* journaled upon the said rod adjacent the opposite. ends thereof and between the pairs of spaced collars 30. A similar expansion. spring 31 is positioned between, the base 19 and the lower end of the claw 23; soythat the expanding tendency of all of said springs 28. and 31 is to normally position the rod 22 at the upper limit of its movement and} with the claw hook 25 engaging the said top tooth as shown in Fig. 5,; which engagement is further assisted by means of a contraction spring 32 connecting the claw 23 with the adjacent side of the casing 10.
A stationary trip bar 33 is positioned adjacent the track at each railway station being secured to any permanent support such as the post 34. A trip rod 35 projects through the side of the casing 10 and is journaled in a bracket 36 carried by the base 19, the said trip rod being capable of rotating as well as having a slight longitudinal movement, but being normally held in the position shown in Fig. 1, by means of an encircling helical spring 37 which latter is engaged between the mounting bracket 36 and a cross arm 38 of the said trip rod. The said trip rod arm 38 is normally positioned vertical and is arranged adjacent the claw mounting rod 22 so that when the trip bar 33 is engaged by the trip rod 35 so as to impart a partial revolution to the said trip rod, the adjacent end of the arm 38 engages the upper side of the rod 22 and imparts a downward sliding movement to the said rod as best illustrated in Fig. 6, and which movement pulls downwardly the claw hook 23 thus moving the wheel 27 substantially a quarter turn and bringing a succeeding portion of the curtain directly behind the window 12 and upon which curtain portion the name of the next succeeding station along the route is inscribed.
The rod 14 is provided upon the end thereof adjacent the bracket 16 with a brake device as best illustrated in Fig. 8 and consists of a star wheel 39 fixed to the shaft and provided with a brake shoe 40 resiliently positioned against the said star wheel by means of a contraction spring il which engages the angular arm 42 of the said brakeshoe, the said arm being pivoted as at 4:3 to a mounting bracket 44; carried by the casing.
From this detailed description of the invention, the complete operation thereof will be at once apparent. With the mechanism normally positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the car having the casing 10 thereon will engage the angular outer end 45 of the trip rod with the station bar 33 and the trip mechanism operating in the manner hereinbefore set forth, the name of the next succeeding station along the route will be plainly visible through the casing window 12 and such name will remain in full view of the passengers upon the car until the next station is reached whereupon the curtain will be automatically shifted in a similar manner for displaying the name of the next station.
' The brake mechanism shown in Fig. 8 is adapted only to act as a slight retaining means for the curtain mechanism when positioned by the trip device in its step-by-step movement, it being understood that the rotation of the rod 14 permits the brake shoe shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
What is claimed as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a station indicating curtain mounted within said casing, a rocking trip rod projecting outwardly of the casing, a cross head upon the inner end of said rod, a claw and wheel actuating means for the said curtain, a vertically shiftable rod for the said means positioned in the path of movement of the said trip rod head, and expansion elevating return means for the said vertically shiftable rod.
2. A device of the class described comprising a station indicating curtain, an operating wheel for the said curtain, spaced posts 5 having vertical longitudinal slots therethrough, a shiftable rod 7 mounted within said slots, a claw arm engageable with the said wheel and journaled upon the said rod, a compression spring having one end attached to the said armand its other end fixedly mounted at a point in a vertical plane adjacent the opposite side of-the said wheel, expansion means beneath the said rod and arm adapted for normally maintaining the said rod in its elevated position, and trip actuating means for the said rod.
3. A device of the class described comprising a station indicating curtain, an operating wheel for the said curtain, spaced posts having vertical longitudinal slots therethrough, a shiftable rod mounted within said slots, a claw arm engageable with the said wheel and journaled upon the said rod, a compression spring having one end at tached to the said arm and its other end fixedly mounted at a point in a vertical plane adjacent the opposite side of the said wheel, a base upon which said posts are mounted, collars fixed to the said rod at opposite sides of the said arm, an expansion spring positioned between the said base and the lower end of the said arm, sleeves journaled upon said rod adjacent the opposite ends thereof, expansion springs positioned between the said base andthe said sleeves, and trip actuated shifting means for the said rod.
4:- A device of the class described comprising a station indicating curtain, an operating wheel for the said curtain, spaced posts having vertical longitudinal slots therethrough, a shiftable rod mounted within said slots, a claw arm engageable with the said wheel, and journaled upon the said rod, a compression spring having one end attached to the said arm and its other end fixedly mounted at a point in a vertical plane adjacent the opposite side of the said wheel, a base upon which said posts are mounted, collars fixed to the said rod at op posite sides of the said arm, an expansion spring positioned between the said base and the lower end of the said arm, sleeves jour nalecl upon said rod adjacent the opposite ends thereof, expansion springs positioned between the said base and the said sleeves, a rocking rod having an angular outer extension, a fixed trip bar positioned in a line of travel of the said extension as normally p0 sitioned and a cross arm carried by the inner end of the said rocking rod having a path of travel transversely of the normal position of the said vertically shiftable rod.
5. An actuating means comprising spaced posts having longitudinal slots therethrough, a shiftable rod positioned through the said slots, an actuating claw journaled upon said rod, normal positioning resilient elevating means beneath the said rod, a bracket, a rocking rod journaled and slidable within the said bracket and having an outer angular extension, a cross head upon the inner end of the said rocking rod having a path of travel transversely of the normal position of the said shiftable rod.
