LIGHTNING--ARRESTER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK I. S'rooKiNo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Lightning-Arrester, oi which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lightning arrester, which is simple, durable, compact and rigid in construction, dust and moisture proof, and arranged to insure safe passage of an arc from a line to the ground without danger of setting fire to surrounding inflammable material.
The inve'ntionconsists of novel features and parts described hereinafter and then claims. v
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters. of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
On a suitably constructed base A are secured binding posts B, B, B l3" and B of which the binding posts B, B are connected with the line wires 0, C, while the binding posts 13 ,13 are connected with the instrumentwires U, i, and the binding post B is connected with the ground at D. The binding posts B, B are connected with each other by a lightningarrester E, and a similar lightning arrester E connects the binding posts B and B with each other, and as both lightning arresters E and E are alike in construction it suflices to describe but one in detail. Each lightning arrester E and E consists of a casing F, preferably of cylindrical shape and made of metal or other suitable conducting material, and within the casing F is held a conductor G of metal, carbon or a like conducting material, and, between the conductor G and the inner surface oi the casing F is interposed. a noncondnctor H having perforations, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The ends of the-casing F are closed by caps I and I of rubber or other suitable insulating material, and on the I said caps I and I are secured metallic contacts J, J having their inner ends in con tact with the ends of the conductor G, the outer ends of the clips being connected with brackets K, K for engagement with a corresponding pair of binding posts 13,13 or of B, 13 Now by the pointed out in the arrangement described, a direct connection is made between the pair of binding posts B, B and B, B to com plete the circuits; but in order not to depend entirely on the lightning arresters E and E for con uectidh between the pairs of binding posts B, B? and B. 13 it is desirable to connect the said pair of binding posts with each other directly by connecting wires CEC as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, The casings E of the two' lightning arresters E and E are engaged at their outer surfaces by the curved ends of a spring bar L secured to a binding post N attached to the base A, and connected by a contacting plate 0 with the ground binding post B" previously mentioned. Now in case lightning strikes either of the line wires C, C then the electrical energy passing by way of the bracket K and contact plate J to the conductor G can readily pass through the periorations inthe non-conductor H to the casing F, and from the latter byway of the springbar L to the binding post N, plate 0', binding post 13 to the ground at D. Thus the surplus electrical energy readily passes to the ground without danger to the instrument connected with the wires C C, it being understood that the ordinary electrical energy sent through the line wires to the instrument readily passes through the lightuingur- Testers E and E without loss of energy owing to the insulating material H interposed between the conducfor G and the casing F.
It will be noticed that the lightning arrest er described is very simple and compact. in construction and is completely dust and moisture proof, as the principal parts are contained within the casing F and the said passage of the heavy electrical discharge can readily pass tothe ground without danger of setting fire to the surrounding inflammable mat crial.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A lightning arr-ester, comprising a tubular casingof conducting material. and having caps of non-comlm-tin; material. a connection between the casing and the ground, :1 conductor within the said casing, perforate tubular non-conductor int'crposcd between the said conductor and the said casing. :tndcontacts secured on the inner faces of the said caps and having their ends in contact with thc ends of the said conductor, the outer cnds of the said (111% tact-s being adapted for circuit connection In testimony whereof I have signed my nztme to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
