CRATE FOR SHIPPING MERCHANDISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct; 22, 1907.
Application filed September 29,1906- Serial No. 336,727.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON Grwowsxr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, Sedgwick county, Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crates for Shipping Merchandise, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box or crate, the sides, top and bottom of which are held together without nailing and which may be taken apart whenever desired and the object of the invention is to provide a box or crate which may be easily and quickly set up or knocked I down and which may be used over and over again and when so knocked down, the parts will occupy the minimum amount of space.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a section through an edge near one corner, Fig. 3 is a view of the clamps.
I form the sides of the box separate and in each corner of each side is provided a small hole 1. I prefer to form each side with an edge plate 2 and at each corner of this edge plate a piece of iron 3 is secured. The edge plate projects beyond the edges of the main portions of the side so as to form a recess to receive the edge plate of the adjacent side as shown in Fig. 2.
The sides of the box are held together by means of clamps 4 placed at each corner and these clamps consist of a member 5 having a hook at one end and its other end fiat and provided with a hole therein and a second member 6 having a hook at one end and a bur at its other end which is adapted to pass through the hole in the other member and to receive a nut 7.
As shown in Fig. 1, a pair of clamps is placed at each corner of the box. The hook on one member grips the edge of a hole and the edge plate of one side and the hook on the other member has a like engagement with an adjacent side. The members are so proportioned that their straight ends project beyond the edges of the sides so that the bur on one member may pass through the hole in the other member and then by tightening up the nut 7, the clamps hold the sides of the box firmly together. The iron pieces 3 prevent the clamps from wearing into the wood. Of course, if desired, the clamps may be located along the side edges of the box as well as at the corners.
From the foregoing it will be seen that any side may readily be separated from the remaining sides or all the sides may be separated from each other. Thus the sides may be placed upon each other so as to occupy the minimum amount of space for storage or shipment.
As shown, the iron pieces 3 are of L shape so that the holes in the sides will be at the meeting point of the two limbs of the L. The iron pieces 3 may be placed between the sides and the edge plates 2 so that the plates 2 will lie on top of the said pieces 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A box or crate having independent sides, having holes therein and clamps for holding the sides together, each of said clamps comprising a member having a hooked end engaging the hole in one side and a second member having a hooked end engaging the hole in the adjacent side, the free end of one of said members having a hole therein and the free end of the other member having screw threads thereon and adapted to pass through the said hole and a nut engaging with the said screw threaded end.
2. A box or 'crate having separate sides, each of said sides having holes in each corner thereof, clamps for holding the sides together engaging with said holes and L- shaped iron plates located at each corner of each side and having a portion extending under the adjacent clamp, both limbs of the L lying in the same longitudinal plane.
3. A box or crate having independent sides, having holes holding the sides together, each of therein and clamps for said clamps comprising a member having a hooked end engaging the hole in one side and a second member having a hooked end engaging the hole in the adjacent side, the free ends of said members converging at the exterior corner of the box and means for detachably connecting said ends together.
In testimony whereof, I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLOMON GIWOWSKY.
