Specification of Letters Patent.

`l `are lndicators, of which the following is an exact specification.
This invention relates to a -iare-indicator for cabs and the like and has for its object a detent-device for a signal, for instance in the form of a flag or the like convenient indicating means, from which it can be seen whether the cab is in use or is free. For the convenience of reference this signal will be hereinafter called indicating-fiag or flag, and as it isknown the position of this indicating flag is usually thus selected that by having an upright and downward position the flag indicates the cab in use and free respectively.
It is well known that when the flag and the fare indicator mechanisin are thus in engagement with each other that the flag cannot be put down prior to the throwing of the indicator into actin 'and no lifting of the flag into the upright position can take place without having the indicator nechanism released, that is to say put out of action.
The indicating flag normally is mountcd in the casing of the indicator and the indicating mechanism is thrown into or out of action either by neans of a loose key or a handle fixedly connected with the mechanisn. In known constructions the shaft to be operated by the key is arranged apart from that shat carrying the flag and special means as for instance suitably shaped disks, toothed wheels and detent pawls are provided for connccting both the aformentioned shats and for rendering thereby the motion of the one shaft in a certain manner dependent on the other shaft. These known constructions are rather cumbersome and the two openings for the shats in the casing are very objeetionablo because rain or dirt can enter the interior of the casing therehy rendering the mecham'sm liable to injury. Furthermore the two shafts for the indicating flag and the kcy or handle respectively require much space whereby the casing becomes large 'and heavy.
The present invention avoids the aforementioned drawbacks and has for its object a consider-able simplification .of the fare-indicator. This purpose is attained by providing two telescoped shafts, which carry the indicating flag and the key or handle respectively.
Besides simplifying the Construction much space is saved thereby, so that the casing of the indicator becomes smaller and'iuthermore one single hole is required for the passage of the two shafts through the* casing.

The free end of the ratchet pawl h is provided with two projections or peaks k 10 leaving an interstice'l between them (see Fig. G, which is a plan elevation oi the ratchet pawl h according to Fig. 5). Fig. 8 illustrates the ratehet pawl in a front elevation.

The tooth h of the ratchet pawl h is of such a width, that it is adapted to bear temporarily against the ratchet wheel d and the circumference of the cam-plate e, as to be seen from Fig. 1 and Fig. 7, in which flatter figure the pawl is illustrated removed from the ratchet wheel. g and g are two stops or pins nearly diametrically and fixed to the cam plate g (see Figs. l and 4.)

It will be observed that the hookr is adapted -tointerfere either with the stop 9 or the stop g'.`
The operation of the forcgoing described mechanism is as followsz-As it will be observed from Fig.l the indicating flag c cannot be put down because the tooth h of the spring-pressed pawl h engages with the ratchet wheel c l. This engagement is permitted as the depression g is opposite to the tooth h of the ratchet pawl h'. For the purpose of releasing the ratchet wheel from the pawl h the handlef and the cam plate g respectively are rotated in the direction o the arrow I (see Fig. 1). Due to thisrotation the tooth h is engage'd by the a'scending part g of the circumferenc'e of the cam plate 9, whereby the pawl h and the ratchet wheel d are disengaged. At thesame time the spring-pressed pawl h is riding on the curved'tongue g* thus preventing the tooth 7:2 from 'engaging with the ratchet wheel d The cam plate g and the handlc f respectivel'y are rotated until the stop g' pushes against the hook 79 Then the peak 10 has fallen down from the curved tongue g" and the peak or tooth Ic' engages with the. ratchet 'wheel d. This position is illustrated in the Fig. 10, and now the indicating flag c can be put down. By the ro-. tation of the flag arm the cam disk m and the toothed wheel o engaging with the ratchet wheel d are also turned round, till the projection 7 slides into thede pression m. The detent lover r is thereby lowered and the hook-r is moved downwardly and thereby removed from the path of the stop g' (see Fig. ll). In the posi- 'tion occupied by -the various parts of thedetent-device according to Fig. ll the indicating flag cannot be placed vertically owing to the engagement of the spring depressed paw'l h? with the ratchet-wheel d. lt may be observed that the movement of the cam plate g must be controlled by a detent (levice or in any other convenient manner, as it is well-known, that the cam plate is allowed tobe rotated in only one direction.
This arrangement is of itself well known and is thereforo not further illustrated.
