cation.
rlhis invention comprehends a certain new and improved construction of wrench of that which the jaw stock is spect to the handle, for relatively adjusting general type in rotatably adjustable with rein which special provision is made the clamping jaws, and the said invention primarily seeks to provide a wrench of the general type stated, construction, in which the ranged for quickly effecting the jaw, for setting the jaws of a simple and inexpensive parts are coperatively arrotary adjusting oi the and locking them to their set position, and for quickly releasing the jaw stock to adapt the same for ratchet wrench purposes.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the de bination ol' parts herein tailed arrangement and comaitcr fully described, specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure struction of wrench, the
1, is a perspective view of my improved conjaws being disposed in a iixed position and in longiludinal alinement with the han- `dle and held locked lo main jaw locking device jaw stock being held at as a ratchet wrench. of my wrench taken on such position by primary or Fig. 2, is a similar view, the an angleto the handle to act Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig.
4, is a rear elevation ol the head end of the handle, the cap plate being removed to illustrate the correlation oi' lthe ratchet or pawl device and the notched end of the jaw stock. substantially on the liu detail view oi the stock and the sliding .is a detail view of the Fig. 8 is detail pei-spec Fig. is a longitudinal section taken Fig. 6, is a jaw. ber 14 hereinafter referred to.
ln the practical appl ic ation of my invention, the handle 1 has its head portion l0 formed with a transverse bore ll. of uniform diameter throughout, the rear end ol which, at the lower edge, merges with a longitudinal recess l2 in the rear face the supplemental lockin of the head, in which operates device or ratchet pawl presently described vin detail.
On the Yfront l'ace, the handle dovestailed recess 13, i
has a longitudinal or n which is slidably held the main locking device which is in the nature of a long member l-l suitably sha the dove-tailed recess formed with an outward pose of which is readily pcd in cross section to engage I3 and having its upper end ly projected `heel 14, the purapparent from the drawings.
that extends from the fixed s PATENT OFFICE.
ONE-HALF TO GEORGE Patented Oet. 22, 1 907.
The jaw stock or head 20 has an integral circular hub 55 2 which is of a length equal that of the bore in the handle head portion 10, in which it is rotatably mounted as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
`The head portion 21 has bottom of the said portion 21 treme lower end, has a recess 14L oi the locking member 14, the fixed position, as shown in 3 designates a movable able in the groove 21, aperture 3l for engaging the t a smooth aperture 41, the iixed a longitudinal groove 2ln jaw 20 down through the 60 and the latter at the ex- 22, into which the heel [its when the jaws are in Fig. l.
jaw that has a shank 30 slid- 65 and provided with a threaded hreaded end 40 of the adjusting screw 4, where the smooth end passes through jaw has a turning head 42 that rests on the upper side of the jaw 2, it being 70 understood that by turning the rection, the movable desired.
By referring now more (i, it will be noticed that a series of straight radial the re partie said screw in either dijaw can be slid up or down, as
ularly to Figs. 2, 4 and ar end oi the hub 2 has 75 notches 2*1 in its peripheral edge with which coacts the supplemental locking device or ratchet pawl, that automatically intel-locks with the said notches when adjusted therefor. This device consists of a round shank 6 rockably held in 80 the groove 12, by mounted in said with its locking end spring 18. piece 60, by means of which rocked to bring the upper end, eled edge, in position to interlo means of the strap 1G, it being also groove to slide in the direction of the hub 2, and is automatically l'orced in said direction projected within the bore 1l by a The lower end of the shank G has a finger the said shank can be which has a single bevck with the ratchet end of the hub 2 for either direction of rotation of the jaw.
So far as described, to adjust the jaws to the iiXed position, shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the jaw stock is turned to bring the jaws in the longitudinal plane of the handie,
to which position they are held by sliding the locking member-'14 into engagement therewith, it being understood, by sliding said'member 14 jaw head will be held to turn freely in its the head l0, the downward sli being limited by the stop 15 as To protect the ratchet end down, the bearing on ding of the member 14 shown.
of the jaw stock and the locking end of the ratchet, a cap 19 is secured over the 100 said parts, said cap also serving as a means for holding the screw 20, keeps the that engages the hub 2, and thereby rotary jaw head mounted in the handle head.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the manner in which my invention may be used and tion will be readily apparent. the jaw head and combining i the complete construc- By reason of mounting t with the ratchet and pawl devices, and arranging the paWl 6 in the manner shown, the Wrench may be used as a ratchet Wrench operable in opposite directions by simply adjusting the pawl G. i To secure the jaw head in position to form an ordinary monkey Wrench, the member 14 is slid into a locked engagement therewith, as shown in Fig. l.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A Wrench comprising a handle head having a transverse bore, a jaw head that includes han adjustable jaar l member, said head having a hub for iitting on the bore in the handle, said hub having a series of straight radial notches in its peripheral edge, the jaw head havinga recess, a latch or pa\vl slidably mounted on one side of the l handle to engage the jaw head recess, a pawl rotatably mounted on the other side of the handle, said pawl havingr l, a single beveled locking edge, means for automatically holding said edge in contact with the recessed end of the l jaw hub, and means for holding the jaw head hub in the bearing of the handle, all beingr arranged substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein described improved Wrench, which conm prises a handle havinga head portion formed with a transA verse Ibore, a jaw head formed with a hub rotatably mounted in the said bore, a cap secured to the outer end of the hub and to the bored head, a movable jaw slidablv mounted on the other jaw, the said other jaw having a lockingv notch, and member slidably mounted on the front side ot' the handle for interlocking with the rotatable head, the outer end of the hub having circumferential straight notches, a pawl rockably mounted on the rear face ol the handle, said pawl having a single beveled ratchet edge adapted to he moved into position to be engaged by the said notch, the said pawl includinl a turning,l portion and a spring for holding,l the said paWl to its turningpositions all being arranged as shown and described.
