rrrnnocsnnon-moron. i
Beit known that we, Annor Aveos'r'ps Lonqand AUGUST \Vassrulnn, citizens of the United States, re-
siding, respectively, at Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, State of New York, and at Halletts Point,
Astoria Queens county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'H'ys ,drocarbon-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
Our improvements relate to the class of motors in which'liquid hydro-carbon is vaporizecl'and mixed with air to form thecharge 'which -is exploded in the combustion chamber, and the present 'inventionrelates essentially to the means employed for effecting the preliminary heatingand starting of the motor,
said operation.
To this end the invention consists essentially in the provision of means whereby an auxiliary. supply of liquid hydro-carbon be made to impinge-upon a vaporizing plate, the temperature of which may be quickly raised to the vaporizing point by an electric heater, which may be switched on or off instantaneously as equircd. The invention also includes means. for admiing air to the vaporized hydro-carbon and introduci g the mingled air and vaporized hydrocarbon into the main mixing chamber immediately adjacent to the induction valve between said main mixing chamber and the combustion chamber, so that these preliminary charges used in starting the motor, will be immediately introduced into the combustion chamber with little or no loss of heat by radiation or by absorption by the walls of the main mixing chamber.
The accompanying drawing represents diagrammatically and in sectional elevation, the parts of a hydro-mrbon motor essential to an undcrsurnding and practical operation of our invention.
P is the rccipnxrating piston within the cylinder C, the upper part c, of which constitutes in this case the combustion chambcr, in which the successive chargm are exploded by a sparking device S, of any dcsircd or well known construction.
M, is the main mixing chamber in which, during the normal running of the motor, liquid hydro-nirbon is forced through an injector I, in the usual mauncr, the liquid hydro-carbon thus injm-tcd being made to impinge against a perforated scrccn m', as heretofore, said screen 122, being interposed between the injccwr I and the automatic induction valve V, which in turn is intcrposml between the main mixing chamber M. and the combustion chamber c, in 'the cylinder C. Air is admitted to the main chamber through a damper l), as hercwiore to bc mixcd with the vaporized hydrocarbon bcforc its intrmluction into the combustion Specification of Letters Patent. chamber. After the preliminary heating and starting of the motor, the feeding and operation of the motor isthe sameasusual. i v
The main noveltyin the present application consists in the use of a; relatively small auxiliary chamher A, and accessories hereiriaiter described, whereby preliminary charges of vaporized hydro-carbon mixed with air may :be introduced into thelpwer'part otthe Y main mixing chamber immediatelyabove'nnd-adjoiri- 1' ing the induction valve V, which-is Ol s d as here tofore by suction caused by the-piston. For this reason the auxiliary vaporizing A, is connected ir'ectly by a conduit a with the lower portion of the main mixing chamber M, in proximity to induction valve V, substantially as illustrat'd 'inthe accomranying d g Within a anxiliary mixing the.
ing, in connection, toafiord a vaporising-mediuni which may be quickly heated to a temperature inf;
ficicnt to vaporize liquid hydro-carbon brought into. contact therewit Underneath, and -injclose prox imity to, this va rizing plate 6, is' an electric heating device E, of any dcsiredor well known form, that shown in thedrawing being represented sym'bolimlly and consisting of a resistance coil '0, in an electric circuit 6, of which the ,battery F, or other source of electricity forms a part,the electric circuit being ('ontrollcd by a suitable switch represented symbolically at vaporizing plate 6, preferably made copper or other metal of relatively high conductivity,theobject be-' d, is a puppet valve which opens automatically to admit. air to oxidize the hydro-carbon vaporized by,
the plate 1:. when the main induction valve V, is open.
11, is an oil cup or holder of any shitable character dis mscd in position as may be found most convenient, containing an auxiliary supply of liquid hydro-carbon, the admission -of which to the auxiliary vaporizing chamlx-r A, is regulated by a suitable valve h; interposed between the inlct pipe h, and the cup or holder.
By the use of thc supplementary moans above described (or (fft'Ctlllg thc preliminary heating and starting of the motor we are enabled to materially shorten the' said o xeration. nincc thc va mrizing plate b, maybe miscd almost inslanlanmusly by thcieloctrical heating device to a tcnqwmturc sullicicnt to died, the vaporization oi the liquid hydro-(arbon.
Whalwc claim as our in vcntion and desire to secure by lmtu-rs Patent is,
