Description

PATBNTED 001. 15,1907.
J. MoINTYRE. ELEGTROMAGN BTIG APPARATUS.
APPLICATION FILED HAY 16 1908.

ELECTROMAGNETIC APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15,1907.
Application filed Maylfi, 1906. Serial No. 317,109.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN MGINTYRE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Electromagnetic Apparatus, ol which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to induction coils and similar apparatus, and its object is to provide new and improved electromagnetic apparatus, arranged to permit convenient and accurate adjustment of the make and break contact points.
The invention consists oi novel features and parts and combinations ol' the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indie-ate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is an end elevation oi the improvement; Fig. 2 is a plan view ol the same; and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 3-43 oi Fig. 2.
in the casing A of the electro-magnetic apparatus is unnint'ed the usual coil cylinder B provided with primary and secondary wires and the core B, opposite the outer end of which. is arranged the armature 0" held on the free end of a spring armature lever C fixed at its other end to the casing A. The armature lever C is provided with the contact point C adapted to contact with the normally lined contact point D held on a bar D, normally locked against movement in a clamping device E attached to the casing A, and preferably in the form 01' a split bridge having clamping members E, E between which is held the bar D carrying the contact point D. The clamping members E, E are engaged by a clamping screw F provided at its head F with pivot F for a hand or operating lever G to swing on in an up and down direction. The hand lever G is provided with an elongated slot G into which projects pin H extending from the fulcrum end of a locking lever II adapted to engage a slot C formed in the armature C to hold the latter against movement whenever it is desired to adjust the contact point D relative to the contact point C The locking lever H is iulcrumed at H on a bracket I attached to the casing A, and the said locking lever H is normally out of engagement with the slot C so as to allow a free vibratory motion of the armature lever C. When, however, it is desired to adjust the contact pin D relative to the contact pin 1*, then the operator swings the hand lever G upward to impart a downward swinging motion to the locking lever 11, to engage the latter with the slot C thereby holding the armature G and its armature lover 0 against movement. The operator now imparts a lateral swinging motion to the hand lever G, so as l to turn the clamping screw F to move the clamping 1 members E, E apart, thereby unlocking the bar D carrying the contact pin D. The contact bar D can now be adjusted, but is 'n-eierably self-adjusting, and for this purpose the bar D is provided with a recess D containing a spring J abutting against an arm K t'ulcrumed at K on the clamping member E, and engaging with its free slotted end Y a pin K held on the clampingmember E Now, when the clamping members E, E are moved apart, and the bar D is unlocked, then the spring J lorces the bar D inward, to bring the contact point D in proper position relative to the contact point 0 When this has been done the operator swings the hand lever G laterally back to the lormer position, so as to cause the clamping screw F to draw the clamping members E, E together to securely clamp the bar D and consequently the contact point D in the adjusted position. he operator then swings the lever G downward, so as to cause an upward swinging movement oi the locking lever H, to disengage the same from the slot C in the armature C, thereby unlocking the latter.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the armature C is locked against movement previous to unlocking the contact point D, and the latter is locked against movement previous to unlocking the armature C. It will also be noticed that when the bar D and the contact point D are unlocked the bar adjusts itselt" by the action of the spring J, to bring the contactpoint D in the desired position rela tive to the contact point C A spring L held on the clamping member E engages the rear end of the hand lever G, to hold the same against accidental movement, and the outer edge of the lever G normally rests against a guide pin N attached to the clamping member E to prevent lateral movement of the said hand lever G when the armature is in the unlocked position and the contact point D is in a locked position.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the locking lever rests against the front face of the bracket I to prevent lateral displacement ol the locking lever H. The contact bar D is provided with a lug D fitting the split between the members E, E of the clamping device E, to prevent turning of the contact bar D and its contact point D.
It is understood that I do not limit myself to the detail construction shown and described, as the same may be varied without deviating from the invention.
In order to permit of making a hard contact between the contact points C and D, I prefer to make the lever H wedge shape in cross section, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, and to reduce the length of the pin N so that the lever H can be swung down into the groove G a desired distance, and the bar D unlocked to allow the spring J to press the contact pin I) into engagement with the contact pin G now further away from the contact pin short distance inwardly, that is, until the front wall of the groove 0 abuts against the locking lever H.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An electro-magnetic apparatus of the class described, provided with a locking device for the contact points and capable of holding the armature contact point against movement while the other contact point is unlocked and free to move and vice versa.
2. An electro-magnetic apparatus of the class described,
provided with separate locking and unlocking mechanisms for the contact points, and a manually controlled lever common to both mechanisms and arranged to move one mechanism into locking position and mov e the other mechanism into an unlocking position and vice versa.
3. An electro-magnetic apparatus of the class described, having a locking lever for the armature, a clamping device for the normally fixed contact point, and a hand lever controlling the said locking lever and the said clamping device.
4. An electro-magnetic apparatus of the class described, having a locking lever for the armature, a clamping device for the normally fixed contact point, a hand lever controlling the said locking lever and the said clamping devi'ce,, and means on the said clamping device for selfadjustment of the said normally fixed contact point on unclamping the latter in the said clamping device.
5. An electromagnetic apparatus of the class described, having a locking lever for the armature, a clamping device for the normally fixed contact point,'a hand lever controlling the said locking lever and the said clamping device, and a guide pin for the said locking lever.
6. An electro-magnetic apparatus of the class described, having a locking lever wedge-shape in cross section and adapted to engage a groove in the armature, a clamping device for the normally fixed contact point, means for self-adjustment of the said normally fixed contact point on unclamping the latter in the said clamping device, and a hand lever controlling the said locking lever and the said clamping device.
7. An electro-magnetic apparatus of the class described, having a locking lever for the armature, a clamping device for the normally fixed contact point, a hand lever controlling the said locking lever and the said clamping device, means on the said clamping device for self-adjustment of the said normally fixed contact point on unclamping the latter in the said clamping device, and means for holding the said normally fixed contact against turning on opening the said clamping device.
8. An electromagnetic apparatus provided with an armature contact, a self-adjusting contact provided with a lug, and a support for the said self adjusting. contactand having a slot for engagement by the said lug to hold the said self-adjusting contact against turning.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
