Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwis C. MARR, a resident of Wall Rose, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steps for Vehicles, the.; and I do hereby declarc the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to steps and has special reference to the class of steps that are used on vehicles, such as ice, laundry, and other wagons.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap simple and eiiicient form of a step which can be folded up when not in use, can be locked when in use, and will also permit its swinging when in its lowered position to prevent injury thereto.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved step, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure I is a rear view of a wagon showing my improved step applied thereto and in its folded position. Fig. 2 is a Side view of the rear cnd of the wagon showing the step in use. Fig. 3 is a side view of the step showing the same in another position. Fig. 4 is a like view ofthe same in its folded position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the step support.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures ofthe drawing.
As illustrated in said drawing, A reprcsents a vehicle, such as a wagon, which has the usual bed o thereon and to the bottom b of said bed my improved step is supported. This step consists of the brackets 2 which are secured at their upper ends by bolts 3 to a sill or bar c extending across the under face of the wagon bottom b and their lower ends carry the cross-bar 4 be.- tween inwardly extending portions 2 on the same. The bar 4 extends beyond the brackets 2 and a bracing bar 5 lits around each end of the same and is bolted on its upper end to another sill or bar d extending across the under face of the wagon bottom b in the rear of the sill c, while the ends of the cross-bar 4 are provided with the nuts G engaging with the same and bearing against the bracing-bars 5.
A collar 7 is formed on the cross-bar 4 adjacent to each of the brackets 2 and between said collars and said brackets the supporting arms Sfor carrying the step-plate S) of the step member or portion 1 are placed. These arms S are revoluble upon the cross-bar 4 by means of a slot I0 through which the said bar passes, and secured above the ends of said arms and between the same is the cross-rod 1I. A spiral spring I2 is conl nected at one end to the center of said rod II and its opposite end is connected to the under face of the wagon bottom'b. The step-plate 9 extends across and between the arms 8 and is connected to extending portions 13 on said arms by means of the bolts I4.
The use and operation of my improved vehicle step is as follows-As shown in Fig. I and Fig. 4 the stepportion I is in its folded position and is locked and held from moving outward by means of a projection I5 formed on one of the brackets 2 and extending below the bar 4, which is adapted to engage with one of the lugs or extensions IG formed on the end of one of the arms 8 adjacent to the rod 11. The step-portion 1 when in this position is held from moving backward by means of the side or end edge of the step-plate 9 engaging with bars, or by means of the spring I2 connected to the bottom b and the said portion through the rod Il being extended, vaccording to the length desired of the step-plate 9.
When it is desired to use the step-portion l, it is pressed or pulled down in a vertical line, which will allow the arms 8 and plate 9 to be lowered down through the bar 4 moving in the slots IO in said arms and thereby freeing the lug I6 on said arms from the projection I5 on the brackets 2, so that said step-portion can be thrown outward on the bar 4 through the slots I0 in said arms 8 and by the extension of the full lines in Fig. 3 and upon being used by a person, as shown in Fig. 2 the said step portion will be brought down to a substantially vertical position. When the step portion I is so lowered the bar 4 will move along the slots IO in the arms 8 of said portion I during the lowering of said arms and the spring I2 connecting said arms and bottom b will be extended, while such portion will be prevented from rotating and held in such position by means of the lugs 16 on said arms engaging with the inwardly extending portions 2/ on the brackets 2 while so being used.
When the step-portion I is not in use, the said portion will be raised on the bar 4 through the slots I0 in the arms 8 by reason of the extension of the spring I2 being released, so that portion will again assume the position shown in full lines Fig. 3. While in this position the said portion I will be enabled to swing backwards and forwards through the medium .of said spring I2 in case of any obstacle coming against said portion I during the backing of wagon, or from any other causes, so that when in ,this position and free, the step-portion is always ready for use. When the step-portion I is in this position and it is desired to raise the same to its folding position, it is turned forward by its slotted arms 8 on the bar 4 to a vertical position and pressed downspring I2 being released. When the step-portion I is thus thrown out it will assume the position shown in ward so that the lug I6 on the arm 8 is below the pro jection l5 on the bracket 2, and upon pressure being released, the said spring l2 will raise the said portion to its folded position and allow the said lug to engage the said projection for locking and holding said portion in such folded position.
lt will be evident that my improved vehicle step can be applied to any sort of vehicle and oi any kind, While such step can be also applied and used on other objects and for other purposes, and that various modilications and changes in the design, construction and opera-tion oi the same may be resorted to without departing irom the spirit oi the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. lt Will also be obvious that my improved f step when in its folded position will not interfere with or be in the way oi the use oi the Wagon or other object upon which it is used, and it can be easily and-quickly folded or set in position for use when desired. The device is strong and durable and will not get ont oi order, and when folded up or in position ior use will not be liable to become broken er injured. It will also form a rigid and strong device when in use and Will be securely held and locked in either its iolded or operative position until it is desired to move the same to the other position desired.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a step, the combination of stationary supporting brackets, swinging arms carrying the step pivotally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connections, and lugs on said arms engaging with said brackets to lock the step in the lowered position and prevent the same from rotating.
2. In a step, the combination of stationary supporting brackets, swinging arms carrying the step pivotally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connec tions, and lugs on said arms and engaging with a stationary projection for locking the arms and step in the folded position.
3. In a step, the combination of stationary supporting brackets, and a spring controlled swinging step pivotally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connections.
4. In a step, the combination of stationary supporting brackets, and spring controlled swinging arms carrying the step pivotally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connections.
5. In a step, the combination or stationary supporting brackets, and spring controlled swingingr arms carrying` the step pivotally mounted on and between the said brackets through slots in said arms.
G. In a step, the combination of stationary supporting brackets having a bar between the same, and spring controlled swinging arms carrying the step pivotally mounted on the said bar and between said brackets through slots in said arms.
7. In a step, the combination of stationary supporting brackets, and spring controlled swinging arms carrying the step pivotally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connections, and means on said arms for holding the step in the lowered position and preventing the same from rotating.
S. In a step, the combination of stationary supporting brackets, spring controlled swinging arms carrying the step pivot-ally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connections, and means on said arms and engaging with said brackets to lock the step in the lowered position and prevent the same l'rom rotating.
9. In a step, the combination of stationary supporting brackets, spring controlled swinging arms carrying the step pivotally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connections, and lugs on said arms cn gaging with said brackets to lock the step in the lowered position and prevent the same from rotating.
lO. In a step, the combination ot stationary supporting brackets, spring controlled swinging arms carrying the step pivotally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connections, and means on said arms for locking the arms and step in the folded position.
11. In a step, the combination ol' stationary supportingl brackets, spring controlled swinging arms carrying the step pivotally mounted on and between said brackets through slotted connections, and lugs on said arms and engaging with a stationary projection for locking the arms and step in the folded position.
